Hello FANFA and welcome to the Eight Forums

Is your post a question, or a statement?
I am not sure of your post meaning?

However I can say ahead of time, that we know there are a few variations of Windows 7 'file versions' within the "C:\Windows\Programs\Windows Mail" folder that will work, but it Always has to be combined with a Vista version msoe.dll; I suppose it's possible that a very early version release of a Win7 msoe.dll may also work but would be a moot point. We also know that you can take and use a Windows Mail Programs folder right from Windows Vista and use that whole set of older version files in the process of reinstating WinMail on Win8/10 and it will work too, with minor variations. And so yes there are Many combinations, however our goal was always to use the latest file versions possible, and that's my answer, and what is given on the first post.

We also know that the WinMail reinstatement process works on all versions within the Windows 10 line (Home, Pro, Enterprise and even LTSB) up until around Windows 10 build 16199 (170513-2252) ..which is when as we know they removed the OE legacy code of OE (WinMail) from the base, which now makes it unfeasible to continue the ''Win10'' WinMail reinstatement project any further; however we know that those who want to use WinMail on Win10 up to that point, or Win7/8 until the end when their decision is to move on will never have to worry.

Could you give a more exact explanation of what you mean yako?

Give us an example so we can re-create what you're saying ..maybe also a screenshot

Do you have a link we could load up in our newsreader, to see and duplicate, what you're saying?

I dont know how can i explain myself but i'll try.

There is a anchor method for nntp messeages (news:89wrfsl88290f@acmenntp.org) llike URL links. When you refer some other nntp message; you can type "news:" prefix and Message ID like (news:89wrfsl88290f@acmenntp.org). And when your message sent; clickable link appears in your meesage like " news:89wrfsl88290f@acmenntp.org "

When someone sees and click this link; the referred message opened in new message window.

From OE to Winmail underWin7; it works like that. But under Win8 and Win10, (news:89wrfsl88290f@acmenntp.org) links appeared and looks like clickable but, when we click it; nothing happened.

I hope i explained myself with my limited english :)

Yes I understand what you are saying now.

I use that feature on mine often on Win7 and so I know it works, I also just tested it on Win10 and it works there too, but, in all versions of Windows there is a little detail you need to remember first....

...and that is whatever newsgroup you are viewing at the time, in order for that feature to work, that particular newsgroup account first needs to be set as the ''Default'' news account - and then it will work.
You can change that setting around of which newsgroup to use as Default, whenever you want.
Here's how to set it:

Go to the top tab of: Tools> Accounts> News ..and set desired newsgroup Default first, and then it'll work.

Here's a Screenshot spoiler I just made within Win10 for you to show what I mean:
SetNNTPAccountAsDefaultFirst....jpg

However there are some newsgroups who do not follow the style WinMail uses, and so occasionally I've seen some newsgroups not work for that feature with WinMail ..ymmv

...you're welcome :)

...btw, it's the same setting to make for any news groups, not just nntp
I have to change mine every-time I want that feature to work with whatever news group account I have.
I don't use it too often though really, but sometimes it is convenient to use.

My Win 10 Enterprise just updated to 10.0.6299 CE and interestingly it removed any shortcuts I had to Windows Mail, which as you say Endeavour, is no longer in existence.
Just a footnote.
I'll now use Webmail & try to set up the Windows Mail App at some stage.
I'm not fussy as this is a secondary system anyway.

My Win 10 Enterprise just updated to 10.0.6299....

10.0.6299 ?

Instead look in your Windows About Box Peter ...and what does it say for your Win10 version numbers?

...this build 10.0.6299 you give above seems like you are still using in the vicinity of Win10 version 1511 ...and that 10.0.6299 maybe is the latest build number for the update you applied.

I can't tell what Enterprise OS version you have by your numbers you give.

Anyway, if you are using Windows Enterprise v1511 then you still have WinMail available within it for you to reinstate. btw, it's normal the shortcut gets removed.

Please clarify you actual OS version number by looking in your Windows About Box Peter, inside any folder, go up to the top Help tab> About>..box, or the About box from your Control Panel> System> Help tab About box, and what does it say?

It's not that easy to find the info in simple terms rather than a string of numbers but I assume this is what you want?

By the way, apologies to all that we are discussing Win 10 in a Win 8 forum, but this is because this is the authoritative thread on the subject.

Yes that's better numbers Peter, and so version 1709 is the latest Win10 OS version (as of today) and so yes WinMail has been neutered on that for good.

For WinMail users on Win10 would need to stay with version 1607 like I am, or as Billg226 recently had done is staying at v1703 (build 16193 i believe)

Certainly version 1709 is out of the question. I would of turned off WU if I were you and just updated manually, but maybe you wanted to go forward now and that's fine.

Thanks. Yep, one looks at the contents of the Windows Mail folder in Program Files....totally different.
I'm not sticking with any version because I'm concerned I'd miss out on essential security updates, if I wasn't careful.

That's the beauty of the offered monthly Cumulative Update and being able to download it manually (also any Service Stack or Flash updates, and whatever important update not included)

Anyway I support whatever your desire is to do, or anyone else's :)

Personally fwiw, I don't update the Cumulative every single month, ymmv, I do it more like every few+ months, or, importantly whenever there has been a really, very, critical update that goes by which for safety sake needs installing ..and so at that point (after all the updates bugs are worked out) I will just install the latest Cumulative and catch it all up current in one update install. I don't want to be a monthly beta tester for Win10; the rate of Windows Update 'updates' problems this last year for all OS's have been very problematic. Also the Win10 Fall Creative Update series has nothing I need right now anyway, ymmv, and that is why with Win10 I prefer to stay with OS version 1607 in order to keep WinMail active.

Since this is a Windows 8 Forum WinMail thread and so I want to also say, that with pleasure, I absolutely love/enjoy/appreciate Windows 8 (Win7 & Vista too) with using WinMail, and keep them all fully updated current

Hello dacorsa,

For Windows 10 and WinMail happenings I guessed you missed the conversations back on some previous posts.

Importantly, I ALWAYS keep the WinMail tutorial constantly updated, and so always check Post #1 of this thread for the latest information for when it gets fixed..
