How to reinstate WinMail onto Windows 8/10/11

Yes. Upgrading is like installing a service pack or doing a repair install or an sfc /scannow, in all cases hacks like winmail tend to be undone, therefore you have to redo them.

I put msidcrl30.dll in my system 32 folder. Deleted Windows Mail folders in Program Files. Copied my Windows Mail folder from Program files on my Windows 7 (64) computer to a usb stick and then pasted it in Program Files on my Windows 8.1 machine. Now my old email is working like a champ.
I use gmail for my junk stuff so my main acct stays fairly clean.

I thought that if you copied software directly, it would not work as the Registry had no corresponding entry, or does windows 8 now do it automatically?

Well in this case it's rather complicated, as Windows Mail is already installed, but it's deactivated and therefore invisible so most registry entries needed are already there. The reason the files are already there is to power other applications such as Calendar, and suchlike, or so I believe. Replacing files with the Vista ones activates it.
It's a shame Microsoft never developed it past Vista but I think it had something to do with the darn EU & other Governments stupidly insisting on Microsoft giving users multiple choices, which they always had anyway, and an unbundled version of Windows, which made it not worthwhile pursuing.

Slightly off topic but will be glad when we leave the corrupt EU.
It may have already been in the registry already from my failed attempts to get it to work before I deleted the other Windows Mail folders. To be honest, I don't know. All I do know is after several failed attempts, I deleted the original Windows Mail folders, put the dll file in System 32 folder, and copied the Windows Mail folder off my Windows 7 machine and pasted it in Program Files on the Windows 8.1 machine...
Now I did have it working BEFORE I updated from 8 to 8.1. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not. To be honest, I'm not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree when it comes to the Registry.

I have software which looks after the pc including the Registry and have not had problems, yet. The amount of residue left over in there is astounding. Needs a good clean at least once a week. Advanced System Care (I have the Pro version) does it all for me. The 'freebie' version does this too.

Upgrading to 8.1 undoes all that and you have to start again...see post #57 on the previous page.
Be very wary of registry cleaners as they will pretty-well guaranteed clean stuff that is needed whether you tell them to or not. Windows itself has most of the tools you need, Disk Cleanup and the manual methods of cleaning temp and %temp% files.

I just discovered that Windows Mail didn't have all its defaults so if yours is the same run this .reg file (unpack the zip and then right-click > Merge or simply double-click it):

Ex_Brit and others, Please do not use that attachment!
It has unnecessary entries that will cause someone cosmetic grief if they merge it messing many of their own set settings while solving no problems!
Furthermore there's no defaults missing within the current WinMailEdit.reg either

The current WinMailEdit.reg has all the latest modifications needed, and has only what is needed. Don't be concerned or try to compare it in size or content to that Old WinMailEdit.reg you give, where back in 2009+ everyone was turning in portions of their own personal registry entries alongside valid ones to solve issues; yes the moments were great and a wonderful community effort in those days and never to be forgotten. However in the process there were some unneeded personal HKCU that were unintentionally sent in alongside valid entries that solved problems, and the personal was unnecessarily retained in the WinMailEdit.reg over a long period.
We have since cleaned it up and removed all unwarranted entries and keep adding more problem solvers as we go along, and now incorporate only what's necessary - and it works so much better!
We removed the erroneous HKCU entries of WinMailEdit.reg for good reason. As with most programs, WinMail's registry is first initialized and driven off HKLM, and the HKCU per-user keys are built by the program when first launched and as options set using HKLM entries as the base, or have some built-in self registering, or both. The Tutorial's WinMailEdit.reg provides only the necessary base HKLM registry entries that Are needed to resolve all operating issues discovered for the project that were found, and so now going forward everyone's own HKCU configuration settings, as it should be, will be preserved when they have to run the latest tutorial files again - that's the beauty of it.
Realize that as WinMail exists and sits in the registry Before anyone ever opens WinMail.exe for the first time, if you were looking at its registry entries comparing it to a fully setup WinMail, yes nearly 40% of its WinMail registry entries in both HKCU & HKLM may appear to be missing...and they are suppose to be, until, WinMail.exe is actually opened and ran for the first time. It's not until one first opens up WinMail and uses it, starts making options changes, setting up their accounts, etc, which all along the way until finished for each process it builds and introduces more and more additional registry settings ...nearly 40% more at the appropriate time until finished.
