How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO

Does anybody know from the instructions of the OP's first post that it will work to use this ISO of Windows 8.1 Pro as a clean install by using a valid Windows 8 Pro upgrade key to activate it,or do you need the full version key?

You'll have to try it to find out. Or wait to see if anybody else tried it. This all new ground for most of use. My other response was just an educated guess. ;)

I've had some many problems with Win 8. First a just got a bad computer and had to take it back and get another one. Then I had problems trying to learn this machine. Finally got a start button and it has been a lot easier for me to learn. Now I want to download 8.1 and I'm scared to do it. I'm afraid it will crash my machine. Is it hard to understand how to use Macrium Reflect to understand what to do, before I download 8.1? I'm a novice using this Win 8. I jumped from Win XP and my age don't help matters any either. I was told that I could choose to do a "Custom Install", because I don't want IE 11. I work with Scripts to make stationary, and IE 11 does not work with it, because you don't have Compatibility. I have an external hard drive with probably 400 gig of space left on it, would that be enough for me to use Macrium Reflect to make a back-up of my machine?

If you have a purchased copy of Win 8, I can upgrade to 8.1 today, but down the road when you have a crash, you can reload 8 but how to you get back to 8.1 without a disk etc? I have upgraded my test machine with 8.1 and now I need to know how I can reinstall the OS after a crash? I don't want to go to 8.1 with my "good" machine if I don't have a good way to reinstall after a crash.

Sorry for my being so dense!!!!!!!

You could make an image of all your local drives with Macrium Reflect on a usb drive.
Then if you have a crash down the road, reinstall everything from the usb drive.

try this one, its a bit easier and plain english gui interface Free Windows PC & Server Backup Software and Disk Cloning Freeware ? AOMEI Backupper its free.

I normally use Acronis 2010,but I tried it just to see what it does and it worked OK on W8. If you make a Image backup of your system you'll be able to "restore" the system "as you backed it up", using a restore DVD/CD so its better than doing clean installs, as all your programs and settings will be there as it was when you did the image (backup) .

That 400 gig drive will be more than able to handle any backup.

Note that although you may previously purchase a legit Windows 8 product key, the product key is unlikely able to be used to install or upgrade to Windows 8.1. Hence you will need the following product key to initiate the install or upgrade:

Windows 8 (core): 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

Windows 8 PRO: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

The keys above will let you install 8.1, but that's all it does. After installation is complete, you will still have to activate with your own Windows 8 key.

SIW2, thanks. That key is accepted but now I get We can't connect right now. Tried many times with UAC enabled and disabled, same response. Also with Defender and Firewall disabled, same result.

@Ztruker.

I think you need to delete the Websetup folder. Users/username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Websetup

Then start again.

Works ok with an upgrade key for me.

Does anybody know from the instructions of the OP's first post that it will work to use this ISO of Windows 8.1 Pro as a clean install by using a valid Windows 8 Pro upgrade key to activate it,or do you need the full version key?

I do believe you need a full (non upgrade) key to activate.

Good to know SIW2,thanks

Saw this on technet site:
To install a client setup key, open an administrative command prompt on the client, type slmgr /ipk <setup key> and press ENTER.
or this on another:
Activate Windows 8.1

- After install, connect to internet.

- Run the following commands from an elevated command prompt ( Win + X key Command Prompt (Admin) ).
( [ENTER] means press the Enter key ):

slmgr -upk
[ENTER] (this removes the install key)

slmgr -ipk +CDKEY
[ENTER]
(the +CDKEY is your original, legitimate CD Key with dashes. XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Do not use the plus sign.)

slmgr -ato
[ENTER] (this starts online activation)

Guess just another way enter key to activate!

still "can't connect at this moment"

I am using MTNL broadband (Mumbai, india); yesterday I was able to download ~1gb of updates for windows 8 for offline updates; (btw my windows 8 is uptodate already)

i have bought an online retail voucher from Singapore for downloading Windows8.1; when i go to the site, i get confirmation, saying the key is ok, proceed to next;

then it says, just a little longer, we collecting necessary files; and then "can't connect at this moment"

(there is no esd folder either in the root or windows; i have cleared the Websetup folder umpteen times, rebooted the machine to no avail

when i tried from XP, it says it can download only from windows 7 or 8 operating system only; (but i have paid not for upgrade but direct purchase); i am at tether's end;

any real working suggestion?

regards

I just completed clean install using the ISO. I was able to swap key and activate using my Pro Upgrade key. I have not decided if I am going to install Media Center yet on this box. Thanks again to the OP and contributors to this thread.
