How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO

I came across this in a search on 8.1 update ISO.It starts off the same as the first post here,by stopping the download of update to get it to download on the PC.Then by using some commands from the command prompt to activate.Not saying this is a legal way,wondered if it works,from Germany,was translated.Be skeptical to try.It does suck that if i update and needed to restore system i'd have to first reinstall windows 8,then go back to store update it again,if reset does not work as said.

Well from Sweden able to translate it for internet here did it or does it work?
It never worked for windows 8 upgrade though.

I followed the OP's instructions in the first post and all went as planned. I aborted the 8.0 download, kicked off the 8.1 which immediately failed, kicked the 8.1 again and it downloaded.

As to the Ghacks link, I wonder who's zooming who. The Ghacks post is dated the 19th, the OP posted on the 18th ... hmmmm

I should add I had problems with the store update process, always failed when trying to restart. The upgrade from the ISO also failed! After some thinking how my boot partition is on a PCI-E Raid controller, I copied my boot image from the external controller SSDs to an auxiliary OS partition I have on the native MB controller - BINGO!

After I got the basic 8.1 partition I copied it back to the external controller SSDs, no problems BTW, even my convoluted True Launch Bar migrated properly to the 8.1 taskbar and all my Adobe apps did not require de-& re-activation. It even migrated the Office 2003 claimed to be not compatible by the upgrade assistant.

So I'm thinking if I had my OS partition on the native controller the store update would have worked. But I then might not have found this ISO download post .

O.k. DJG sounded bit complicated for you,but it worked out.

Still makes me wonder should i try it from first post too.I am use to trial and error tho,way i learn stuff.

Chances with Microsoft not offering an ISO but a download to upgrade makes me leary if i ever need to recover the system have to always go through downloading it again.Not like days of a service pack.

I might bite the bullet and buy full version.

jds63: Do not buy, you don't need to!

The ISO you get following the OP's simple process gets you the RTM ISO! I used it to upgrade both my workstation and convertible tablet using their official 8.0 keys to activate them. Everything is legit. We're just getting a round-about way of getting the RTM ISO. So you have the ISO for insurance later, just use a generic key to install (I used XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB for 8.1 x64 Pro) and your official 8.0 key to activate 8.1.

My workstation is a quite elaborate installation and it migrated everything without a hitch. Make sure you have Win 8 up-to-date.

That's correct. Use the generic key to do the install, then use the real 8.0 Pro you have to activate Windows 8.1.

Some clarification: to do the download follow the OP's instructions, which starts 2 downloads, first 8.0 with your 8.0 key which you abort when it starts, then immediately the 8.1 download as per instructions.

Once you have the download, use the generic 8.1 key to install, and the real 8.0 key to activate.

Yes,but one question my PC did not come with Windows 8 pro i bought an upgrade disc at time.So when i wanted to do a clean install i had to use that registry method to get it activated was posted here at the time.Will this effect me from OP's first post?

I upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium to 8.0 Pro with the upgrade disc and a clean install, no problems. Why did you have to mess with the registry? In any case, the 8.0 upgrade disc key is what I used for the 8.1 activation and it had no problems.

You should do an image backup of your current partition so you can always revert if you run into problems, but if you have a valid 8.0 upgrade disc key from MS you should be fine.

DJG it would not activate when i was done doing clean install,was only choice was all over internet as the way to do it,even posted here.Another method was phone activation at time worked for some.Otherwise i could not activate it at the time.

And that's the right thing to do jds63 . Every case has differences. Interesting about the 8.0 upgrade clean install. I had no problems and so did not do much research. I was very active in Seven Forums back when 7 was coming out even doing torrents, but as you can see from my # of posts I just got back in forum mode for 8.1 to share my experiences and maybe give something back for the good info I got here.
