Solved How to add the "Virtual Network Editor" to VMware Player

Player hasn't had the network config editor in a long time. I don't see the vast majority of people needing to make any changes here. Most home users will do bridged networking which needs no configuration. Don't see customized NAT settings being use by most.

There are 2 advantages of Player

1. You can boot OSX.
2. You don't have to add the *ndisdevicetype registry setting every single time you upgrade to make your local network local.

Virtualbox (otherwise) is preferable in my opinion - although most of the settings I not only do not understand but seem to make no difference. At least with Player there is nothing to change.

At least for version 6 of Player it still works fine.

I wouldn't download a 500mb exe to extract just 4mb if the command running the network editor existed in Player and was known in the first place.

Don't have Pro Plus version to confirm the features but it's logic that the free version will be stripped away from most features as good as possible.
However I still prefer Player for its performance, as a free product.

If you noticed, during instalation the program creates:
-host-only router -> vmnet1
-NAT router -> vmnet8

->bridged connection (vmnet0) can be enabled on the host network hardware's properties.

For instance the bridged networking works straightforward if chosen in the VM properties... all is covered.

The Network Editor isn't a must but along the years people got used to the utility and ease of use.
VMware did promoted the network editor it in a couple of free versions and changed it's appearance and executable along the way but if they want us to forget it, it will take time.

You didn't share the error it gave you but: You're right.

It's another type of installer, it's smaller... however it extracted in C-drive\extract ...where... the installer is found again. :huh:
But you won't find what you need with this method.
Extract command line parameters: fail.

New version, expect things like this.


You simply cannot apply the previous extraction tweaks and get the same files in version 11.

Got it now.

Network editor still works on Player v7.

If you install Workstation, then you get all files anyway.

If you don't want to install Workstation, you just use Player:
Run the Workstation 11 installer: it will extract before installing, but you don't need to install it. Leave it open.
Go to your user folder -> AppData/Local/Temp and it's a 'vmware...' folder that the installer extracted there.
You will find, the biggest file, a *.msi installer in there: this one can be opened with 7-Zip: you'll see core.cab, from here the previous mentioned steps work; you just need vmnetcfg.exe this time. After you got the file you can close/cancel the installer and the extracted Temp folder will get deleted.


That's it.

I wonder if an official method exists, like it was the case for Player v5, for those of us interested in changing the default installed networks. If not, once again, we'll keep this method.

Yes, that's the virtual part of the story.

But this thread is about the vmnet editor that can set up host network adapters used by the virtual network adapters:

This is also the case if you want to alter (add/remove) the default network adapters added by VMware to your Control Panel -> Network Center during install.

I think VMware took out or changed something from the Workstation 11 download. I am unable to find a *.msi file. I downloaded the trial version, which is 11.1.2. Any ideas where it is located now?

The .msi file wasn't in the temp folder but I did find a work around. If you open up cmd and move to the folder where the install is located you can run "<workstation file name here>.exe /extract .\vmware"<-- destination folder.

The .msi file is located in the newly extracted folder.

Thank you for mentioning.

That was also described in the first post, for previous Player versions (v3-4).
However they seem to change something with almost each installer.
