How did you setup your Win 8 install?

I partitioned my 2TB hard drive, then installed Win 8 from within Win 7 and installed the new OS into the smaller partition. I now have dual boot and it seems to work well. I'll be kicking the tires over the next few weeks...

With W8 support of boot to VHD I went that route and dual booted for a while on my work laptop. Everything was running well so I blew away W7 and am running W8 as primary. For home I have it on an older laptop that has been revived with W8 which runs really well on it.

i set it up on VMWare on my laptop running windows 7 Pro and one of my desktops running Windows 7 Pro also. I plan to upgrade both with the upgrade download when it comes out (purchasing new machines offer) I just purchased 2 desktops but I will not be putting them on there. I will be putting one on my laptop that has the vmware now and another desktop.

For my dual boot setup,

I created a 80 GB VHD from Windows 7 Disk Management then formatted it to NTFS. I then boot to Windows Server 2012 disc and use diskpart to locate the .vhd file I created in the Windows 7 partition. Install it there and Server 2012 retained the old Windows Boot Manager unlike Windows 8.

I just created a new partition using easeus partition manager sized at about 12gb. I then downloaded the release preview iso and the windows 7 usb download tool. Used the tool to extract the iso to the usb. Plugged the usb in on boot and it installed very easily

Check the date of bootmgr on your system partition. It can't be the Windows 7 bootmgr as it cannot boot newer Windows versions (or MS security is crap).

The appearence of boot menu in "old" text style has nothing to do with versions.

Windows 8 Pro RTM installed on my laptop for every day use. For work, I have a Windows 7 install running in Client Hyper-V (I don't have a second machine for work, and I like to keep work and personal life separate).

Oh, I meant to say that the appearance is exactly like the old boot manager. there is no new gui look from Windows 8. Just plain old text boot manager.

I backed up (system image) my Windows 7 setup and then installed Windows 8 on top of my windows 7 setup. All works fine. Of interest, windows media centre/player was incorporated into Windows 8.

For god shake, seeing people have dualboot windows and windows.. aaahh that is not that clever..

I have just installed Win 8 Pro x64 on a new computer. This will eventually become my primary workstation, replacing one running Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I had planned on using Win 7 but with Win 8 now within reach, I thought it useful to evaluate Win 8.

I'm still wandering around the new UI in a bit of a daze, trying to grasp the best way to view this new UI. :huh:

On my laptop I have a triple boot (Windows 7 Enterprise x64|Windows 8 Developer Preview x64|Windows 8 Enterprise Eval x64)..

On my desktop I have Windows 8 Enterprise Eval x86..

Went ok
But 2 issues

1) the b***** lock screen innability to change wallpaper
2) Loading with Oracle Virtual Box within Windows 7 64 bit works but because you are trying to instal as standalone using the £24.99 Upgrade setup, the product code shows as incorrect and wont allow registration
Hopefuly it wont stop working in 30 days (?)

Initial system:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 on (Hewlett Packard) Compaq Presario CQ57 bought in August 2012 with £14.99 upgrade offer to Windows 8.

Downloaded U/G (about 6h on 27/10/2012) from Windows Upgrade Offer - Landing Page and burnt DVD. The install image archive in the \sources folder is not install.wim (windows image), but install.esd (electronic software distribution) - presumably to prevent Windows-to-Go installations in Pro. I guess it will be cracked in due course.

Created Extended/Logical partition to install Windows 8 on, and installed Windows 8 Enterprise trial on this resulting in dual boot with Windows 7 HP. Then "upgraded" this Windows 8 version to the Windows 8 Pro upgrade I had burnt to DVD. On both Windows 8 installations, the software "knew" the product code and activated automatically online. Before activation, the Pro version showed the Watermark on the desktop.

The router was broadcasting on channel 13 - although Windows 7 was able to connect, Windows 8 (both Pro and Enterprise) reported that no Wi-Fi connections were available. Changing the channel to 3, Windows 8 was able to recognise and connect to the router.

Added the free Media Center feature from Microsoft, and then 6 updates and then one optional update for my wireless adapter. So I can now dual boot to the Windows 7 Home Premium and the Windows 8 Pro upgrade. I still have the recovery partition intact.

Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade on my primary machine. Everything went smoothly. I'm loving it.

I did mine from Windows 8 Enterprise edition to Windows 8 Pro via custom install.

Everything worked out perfect, and activated automatically as soon it booted up 1st time after install.

On my old Dell Inspiron 1501 the process I went through was as follows:-

Backup Vista, Boot & Repair Partitions (Paragon Partition Mgr Bootable USB Key)
Wipe HSS
Install CP - 2 problems - Graphics card & card reader - downloaded drivers & installed no problems.
Backup CP Partition.
Install RP - same probs same fix.
Backup RP
Remove HDD & Install 320Gb got cheaply on trip to UK...!
Reapply RP image. (Needed to set Active to boot)
Increased OS Partition size & Created Data Partition so I could lose the external HDD for iTunes etc.
Ran Upgrade manager without problems, created Boot DVD, but didn't need to use, and wasn't asked for Key of anything.
Same 2 problems - graphic & card reader - same fix as did "keep" upgrade.
Reinstalled iTunes and it found the music automatically.
Went to Store and reloaded "my apps"!
Running fine!!

Main Machine:-
Nope. Don't think I'll bother until they sort multiple monitor facility. (Would like to be able to replace gadgets with a rolling display of "metro" apps set to one screen.)

Old Machine:-
Nope - no NX support on Sempron 3000.

Last month I put Win8RPx86 on a dual boot with Win7ULTx86 and hard partitions on an Asus 1025CE. Last weekend I upgraded to Win8PROx64 as the only OS on an HP tx2000z since it had a touch screen.
