Solved Help to turn off Bing

Hi,

I was guided by PC Help Forum to your tutorials about Turning Off Bing.

Most days when I turn my computer on but not open FireFox, Bing would open FireFox and insert itself as a Tab or two on FF. I have been trying to get it to stop opening FF and inserting itself onto tabs in my browser. We have 5 pages of suggestions and things I have tried but all has failed. I just want to be free of Bing.

I tried to read your tutorial but I'm not understanding much of it. I was a long time XP user and when I had this computer set up, they modified 8.1 so I could use it more like XP, which I was very grateful for. I am well versed in the use of Windows Explorer and of Control Panel, though I'm not as familiar with some of the terms they use there. I don't know what a charm is (unless it's on a bracelet) and I need to know how to find the things mentioned in the tutorials.

1. Open PC settings, and click/tap on Search & apps on the left side.
I don't know where or how to find PC settings. I don't see it anywhere in Control Panel, nor Search and apps. So I gave up on that procedure.

2. To Turn Off Using Bing to Search Online using a REG File
I don't know what a REG File is. I downloaded Turn_Off_Use_Bing_to_Search_Online.reg
It was in Windows Explorer in Downloads. First I double clicked on it. It asked me if I wanted to run it and I said yes. It took me through a couple small screens and finally said: have been successfully added to the registry.
Since it didn't act the way the tutorial said, I wondered if it had done what it was supposed to do. I went back to the downloaded file and right clicked on it and clicked on Merge and it took me through the same small screens and to the same final message.

Is there something else I need to do? I still don't know where to find the slider that turns Bing off and on.

Hello Bernadine, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The turn off Bing Search tutorial is only for search results from Bing when you do a search in Windows.

It sounds like you have the Bing Toolbar installed in Firefox instead. Uninstalling it will remove it in Firefox.

Be sure to go to the links in the steps in the PC settings tutorial more details about it and how to open PC settings.

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

Thanks Shawn,

I was afraid it was just for search results, but I'm desperate.

It sounds like you have the Bing Toolbar installed in Firefox instead. Uninstalling it will remove it in Firefox.
I wish it were that easy. I have done everything PC Forum has said to do, except removing and reinstalling FF, which is a very stressful and scary thing to even contemplate. I deleted Bing from the drop down arrow in the Google search bar. I have also deleted Bing from Control Panel, Internet Properties, and I don't believed it, it has reinstated itself as the home page. I had set it, and now reset it, to another web site that I go to daily. I don't use IE but I'm sure we did it just to cover all the bases. I have also deleted it from Internet Properties, Programs, Manage Add Ons and only Google is left. I have also run AdwCleaner, Trend Micro HiJack This. It's so much and I'm pretty confused, I don't know if you would or can look at all I've done, it would help me not have to tell it all over again, and it might help you understand my predicament. It's on the PC Help Forum at Bing causing problem | PC Help Forum
The only place Bing (and Conduit but that's never done anything that I know of) shows up is when I do a Search in Windows Explorer. It's all in the posts on PC Help Forum.

I did find the PC Settings on the side bar. I don't like using it though because once I am there I can't get back to my computer without doing the Ctrl/Alt/Delete and opening Task Manager.

Hope you can look over what I've done so far and can help.
Thanks,
Bernadine

Hi Bernadine,

Do you have an app called Bing Desktop installed? If it is installed it won't show up in Programs and Features in the Control Panel. I'm not sure, but that app might cause that problem. In Windows 8, there was a Bing Search App preinstalled. I see they have removed that in Windows 8.1. I'm not sure if that Bing app is still available in the Store. If it is still available, make sure you don't have it installed.

Make sure you don't have any Bing Search/Bing Desktop etc. app installed.

To uninstall any Metro/Modern app, press the Windows Logo Key on your keyboard, then type "Bing". You should see the results in right side of your screen. Now if you have any Bing app installed, it will show up in the result. Right click on the item and select Uninstall.

Hi Shawn,

I tested the ALT F4 and it worked! And I've written it down just in case I need it because I will forget it otherwise.

I've never seen or heard of Snipping Tool before but I found it and that was great! Going to have to make it easier to find.

Hope this tells you all you need to know.

Thanks,
Bernadine

Oh it looks awful small, hope that's the way I'm supposed to do it. Do you want me to do the same with the Conduit?

Hi Arpan,

Thank you for the response. I've found that it's best for me to reply to one person at a time, I get very confused otherwise. I've posted the results of a search for Bing. I don't know if Bing Desktop is on that list. I did do what you suggested but there wasn't anything that would allow me to right click on it.

Hopefully Shawn will figure it out when he looks at the search results

Thanks,
Bernadine

Bernadine,

That looks like search results from you searching for "Bing" in Windows or File Explorer.

I don't see any search results from Bing though.

For now, check in Programs and Features to see if you have anything listed for Bing. If so, uninstall it to see if that removes it from Firefox.

In addition, check in Firefox to see if you have a Bing add-on, extension, or plugin installed. If so, uninstall it. :)

Hi Shawn,

In Programs and Features, I looked for Bing and then just in case I did a search for it. Nothing either time.
I checked again there is nothing about Bing in add-ons, extensions or plugins.

Please don't give up on this,
Thanks,
Bernadine

This would be so much easier on XP. Each time, to get where you want me to be, I have to find out how to get there. Your tutorials are amazing, but the words get all confused in my head.

I did get to Apps, looked them all over and then did a search - no Bing.

Oh, OK. Of all times it didn't happen this morning, it doesn't happen every time I start the computer, and when it does I delete it. Yesterday it did and it went to bing.com and a blank page, before that it had opened one and most recently 2 tabs of bing.com (maybe with more on the address) and I think it was the search page. I thought I had written down in the PC Help Forum what the Bing address was but I couldn't find it back. I will have to restart the computer and when it happens again, I will send you the screen shots.

I tried again and boy did I succeed in getting Bing to open, not just once or twice on one FF screens with 2 Bing tabs and it didn't open the tab I was saving to look at. But it opened two FF screens, the first had 2 Bing tabs. Then as I was checking email I had the original 2 Bing tabs and 2 more were added. So right now I have 6 Bing tabs open in 2 separate screens of FF. And it's taking an unusual amount of time to do anything.

I forgot to answer one question, no I don't have Bing as my homepage, but that doesn't seem to bother Bing in the least. It just takes over as it pleases and does totally what it wants.

Capture Bing tabs.PNG

Capture more Bing tabs.PNG

Hope this helps, it's about to take over my computer.

Thanks,
Bernadine

You must have missed my note before: I missed answering one question, no I don't have Bing as my FF homepage, I haven't checked recently but it wasn't IE homepage the last time I checked it, though if you remember it had re-inserted itself as IE's homepage and I changed it back to the one I want. OK out of curiosity I check IE again. And I don't know if I'm more frustrated or angry about Bing. It has again changed my selection of a home page to Bing, not one but 2. And on top of that insult, it now wants me to sign up for Bing Rewards. I can't believe the audacity of this program! I changed it back to my home page and deleted the 2 bing entries on the list of potential home pages.
