Solved HDMI on TV no audio, poor quality image

I just bought a new laptop and tried the HDMI, but there is no audio and the image is poor.

It's an Asus X501A with Pentium 2020M Ivy Bridge and Intel HD Graphics.

I tried changing the output resolution, to tweak the audio properties, etc.

No success.

Any idea?

Video and sound are separate, although both should be in the HDMI signal - IF THE PC Supports this.

When you plug in the HDMI cable most system will change the default audio playback device to HDMI. However, it sounds like yours is not doing this. With the HDMI cable plugged in, go to the Sound Panel, Playback section. the HDMI should be set as the default Playback device.

If you still cannot get HDMI audio, contact ASUS, since this is a new PC (or the place where you purchased it).

As far as I know, all laptops act in this manner, I have 4 in my household, all different brands and have to do exactly what firebird has described. The same goes for the resolution, by default it uses the laptop. So in the TV settings, that's were you make those changes for input devices to change resolution there.

It does change to HDMI by default, I already checked there.

The TV is 1080p and when I look at the output resolution options for the TV in Windows, the maximum is 1366x768, which is very different. It has 1280x766 but not x720p or 1080p.

Could this be the issue?

I will look in the TV settings.

And just a basic troubleshooting advice that might help you too, if you have another HDMI cable, try using it also. Sometimes we've been doing some complicated and technical tweaks to our PCs only to find out that we have a faulty cable. It already happened to me before. No harm trying. Cheers!

Thanks a lot. The cable is brand new and I bought it in case the other one was faulty, so I have tried with two and same results.

OK, solved.

I did something wrong becase when I tried again to do this suggested by fireberd it went fine, the audio is on the TV and the quality seems to be HD. THANKS A LOT TO ALL.
