Half hour nightmare with Microsoft account lockout

I just went through a half hour nightmare, getting locked out of my Microsoft account.

This new 8.1 PC demanded that I have a Microsoft account for logins. So I had to make one. To avoid JUST this scenario, I looked for a way to get rid of it.

Windows 8.1 Remove Microsoft Account - Microsoft Community

So I set up a local account, then tried logging into that. BUT it apparently treats it like I just got a brand new PC, and all the work, settings etc that I just spent 2 weeks setting up on this new PC, were GONE.

So I tried logging back into the Microsoft account to get everything back, but for some reason, it wouldn't take the password and I was LOCKED OUT!

Sweating with anger and frustration, I had to use my old PC to log into the Microsoft account and change the password, THEN come back here and log in again.

So I'm stuck with this fricking Microsoft account that I can be locked out of MY OWN COMPUTER with, if I forget the exact password.

I hate this, but don't know what to do now.
