Why is there no automatic background driver installation from Windows update for the GTX 980 video card after windows reset or reinstall unlike with my old GTX 570 video card.

Too new is my guess, MS didn't catch up yet. You should be using Nvidia drivers anyway, Those from MS even when exist are pretty basic with no settings to use all the features GPU is capable of.

As well, when Windows update does send out a GPU update it's always an older version. Like CountMike said, best to just grab the latest driver from the Nvidia website.

In the past it was always a pain updating video drivers, specifically making sure you got everything from the previous installation off your system. Now GeForce Experience does a great job of stream lining the operation. all you have to do is check for updates, then select 'Express Installation'. It's that simple. Restarting isn't even required anymore.
