Solved Got my Nokia Lumia 920 Windows 8 phone last night...

Going through the reset process now, no issues so far. I was just asked if I want to restore everything from 12/3 backup or do a fresh install and I opted for the fresh install. I'll see if this helps...

I came to the conclusion about phones in the U.S. a while back -> They're locked! Unless one can root a phone we'll have no control. I'm going prepay with an unlocked phone for sure!

You can only root a device with a Linux kernel, e.g. Android or MeeGo. You cannot root iOS or Windows Phone.

A carrier unlock is different from rooting, jail breaking, or a developer unlock.

You can purchase unlocked devices in the US from various sources. Also, you can, at times, have a carrier provide an unlock if you purchase a device off contract.

I would like to get the Windows 8 phone but I think the screen will be small for me as I have the Samsung Note. Any phone I pick up the screen seems small.

If you're wanting the Lumia 920 unlocked, you'll need to wait until around May 2013 as friggin' att has carrier exclusive rights on the 920. So far, it seems that Rogers Canada (as GSM carrier) will have the pentaband unlocked version of the Lumia 920 soon, that is the only one that can work with T-Mobile's prepaid network.

??? What?!! at&t did the exclusive right thing with the original iPhone. Sometimes I wonder where they get that kind of clout. It must be some kind of marketing maneuver. "Exclusive" Ha-ti-da!

Perhaps I'll go with at&t then. I have a nephew that works for them. Their 5G sounds interesting. Cutting edge stuff. I'll have to give him a ring. Vz does nothing for me anymore.

I had to soft-reset the phone today because it shut down and wouldn't power up normally. This is the 1st time this has happened in the month I've had the phone. Battery life is excellent now that I turned off NFC and uninstalled the Nokia Drive (beta) and turned location services off for most apps. Overall, it's an excellent phone with a few bugs but I would do it again, knowing what I know now.

Oh?? Soft reset? Is that when you pull the battery out and back in after 10 seconds or so?

Nope, you can't remove the battery, so I had to do the "three finger salute" on the vol up/down and power button until it beeped, then release the power button and the phone restarted and I didn't lose anything...

It seems to me that all new phone designs are going that way. Less parts and better stationary fixed lead electrical contacts I would imagination is the reason. And after all, we get new ones every two years anyway. A battery nowadays will outlast that.

Nope, it's just the higher end Windows Phones; like the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920 and I think the Samsung Ativ S. The others, such as the HTC 8S, Nokia Lumia 620, 820, 510, 710, and 610 have removable batteries; along with the HTC Trophy and some other Windows Phone 7 handsets.

It seems to me that all new phone designs are going that way. Less parts and better stationary fixed lead electrical contacts I would imagination is the reason. And after all, we get new ones every two years anyway. A battery nowadays will outlast that.

I think it's also partly due to the design, as higher end handsets don't have removable batteries because it's a design "compromise." Just like how the Lumia 920 doesn't have a microSD card, Nokia didn't want to clutter the design anymore.

Wow no microSD, that is a deal breaker for me unless the phone has 32GB or more of memory. As for the battery, I will sometimes carry a extra battery with me if I'm not going to be around any power for a long time.

Oh boy, so I went to a different att store today, they had an iffy selection of Windows Phones, they're still selling the Lumia 900 oddly enough. But they had a dummy model of the Lumia 920, which I question as that's a flagship Windows Phone 8 handset and isn't a functioning model...

BUT, it was red, and I was able to see what a red one looks like with blue tiles, I'm sold. I was iffy about having a red phone, as that would color clash with the tiles, but it seems like it doesn't really so much. Maybe a bulky red case on my 900 is the reason...

Speaking of such, azasadny, do you have the red Lumia 920? I forget. Also, how does the polycarbonate shell hold up? Does it scratch easily or are the scratches not too noticeable unless if you really look for them? I just don't like using skins or cases on my Windows Phone, it feels weird, and I like feeling my phone when it's naked....

I have the red phone (goes with my MazdaSpeed3!) and I have not noticed any scratches on it. I do not use any protective enclosures, etc... and the phone is very well made and feels great! The polycarbonate case is the best, when Apple minions hold it, the 1st thing they all say is "Wow, this phone feels like it's rock solid". It's a big, heavy phone but I really don't mind at all. I keep it on my right side and it balances out carrying my concealed pistol on my left side (where/when I'm legally able to carry). It's a great phone and I'm very happy with it!
