Google unseats Microsoft as the U.S. browser powerhouse

Computerworld - Google has unseated rival Microsoft as the leading browser maker in the U.S. for the first time, Adobe said this week, citing data from its analytics platform.

The rise in Google's domestic fortunes followed Microsoft's reduction to second fiddle worldwide in May 2013.
According to the Adobe Digital Index (ADI), a measurement of browser usage based on tracking visits to the average U.S. website, Google's desktop and mobile browsers -- Chrome on both platforms, the aging Android browser on the latter only -- slipped past Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE), which retained its premier position on the desktop but had little to show for its effort on smartphones.

I had to ditch chrome because pepper flash was killing me. Every flash video stuttered like crazy. I just could not deal with it any more.

You do know that you can disable "pepper flash", and just install the adobe flash player in Chrome, right? Just install the Adobe Player and then go to Chrome://plugins and disable Pepper flash.

Yes... But that setting never sticks.. Eventually, pepper flash returns. Total PITA! Chrome and pepper flash = terrible.

Also worth noting... They should just abandon pepper flash all together. Nothing good about it, tons of bad. I tried, but I could find no reliable way to completely disable pepper flash once and for all. It would always return a few days later. I looked all over the web for a lasting solution to this, but nothing worked well enough to make it tolerable.

IE is actually better than chrome in regards to overall performance on battery operated PCs, let alone security and certain privacy concerns that IE doesn't have.

It's all the noise that says IE sucks when it really doesn't is the problem.

what does battery operation to do with performance between browsers? Are you saying when the laptop is plugged in, chrome is faster, and when on battery IE? IMHO Chrome is more responsive.
Regarding security I think they all have their flaws and today chrome has a security hole, and tomorrow IE, and the day after tomorrow FF.

My personal experience is Chrome is faster and crashes less with sites that play videos (flash, real player etc.). I'm speaking about plugged in desktop, if that matters.

IE10 Is The Most Energy-Efficient Browser

This is from a year ago with IE 10, but still applicable since IE 9 also holds that title too. This is important considering that most PCs nowadays have a battery that they run off of; this means laptops primarily and tablets as well. Even better on desktops, less power consumption is just a better thing overall.

But in general, IE is best at phishing and malware protection compared to chrome, both are better than firefox. This has also been found out a few times since IE 9. chrome's getting better, but not IE 11/10/9 levels yet.

Not always having Windows saves me lots of other problems

All kidding aside, being in IT means I have to run and support lots of other devices. Even as a Windows based software shop, we are starting to get more and more Apple devices in house. In fact, we are undergoing an MS audit right now and I've heard my director state that we might even consider Apple and Google docs if things don't go well enough. < I'd have to see that to believe it, but then again our software architects and some upper management are already on Mac's and they are getting their jobs done.

The webpage you are viewing has a greater impact to consumptions than the type of browser IMO. It depends how much javascript, flash and other garbage are loop-running when you try to read the page. Disabling Javascript and Flash may increase your batery life as it reduces resource use, including graphic ones. (on top of being faster and more secure)

Disabling Javascript and Flash may increase your batery life as it reduces resource use, including graphic ones. (on top of being faster and more secure)

I use NoScript and Ghostery for those kind of reasons.

If only that were so. Even on sites like Youtube that rely heavily on Flash, it's more efficient.
