My computer originally came with windows 7. I upgraded to windows 8 for $40 and got a product key. I then wiped my hard drive and installed Linux. I would like to install windows 8 again using my product key, however I don't have a Windows OS to us the Windows8-setup.exe to get the iso. What can I do? Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, I have Googled multiple different versions of the question, but I can't seem to find any way of doing it without having windows installed on the machine. Anything in particular that you are thinking of. Thanks for your help.

Do you have access to a another Windows PC?

You can download the installer on a different PC than the target one.

If not, the backup DVD may be the cheapest option that Microsoft supports. Too bad that you didn't opt to get the .iso when you did the original download.

I do have a second window 7 pc, but when I tried to run the windows8-setup program it wouldn't accept the license key. Is the key tied to the computer? If not I will try again. Ya I wish I would have backed that up.

I retried it on my second pc. Turns out I had entered the code wrong the first time. Sorry I didn't catch that earlier. Thanks for your help. I think I got it from here.

Is there a free way?
Oh well, I'll leave this here for someone else.

Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create
.
Use the OPTION ONE, along with your product key, to get an ISO. This step must be done on a computer of the same "bitness" as the one you want to install on.* It is possible that the ISO will not have UEFI support (which you may not need). If you need it, then also use OPTION 2 of the tutorial.

*Actually you may be able install Win8 on the desired computer without entering the product key. Then, do what I said above to get an ISO, etc., using that computer. From this point, you could create a DVD and reinstall Win8 using the procedures in Clean Install - Windows 8. If you reinstall, then you might have to activate using the refresh procedure covered in Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade.
