Free updates for Windows 8 Drivers

I see a lot of drivers that seem to support model xxx to xyz for a given manufacturer. They obviously have a reason to do it that way. It must work for them or they wouldn't do it. It's not something I give a lot of thought to, I can't change it anyway. The downside is that the download package is likely bigger than it needs to be for your one piece of hardware, if you only have that one video card etc. There will be files you don't need. How much bigger is anybody's guess though.

Anyway, the OP's been pretty quite, so how are you getting along there ding dong. < not a username I would have picked. ;)

Yeah, you are right but drivers themselves are not that large, actually just driver part is quite small. A lot of other stuf comes with them, their control programs and utilities and also ad-ons for DirectX, OpenGL, DLL updates .net parts etc. Those things used to come separately but now it's all bundled, If you are curious enough, you can go to properties for that device and look up in details what files it uses and than find them on the disk and see how much of that is actually a driver. I bet all of those make actually only couple of percent of downloaded file.

Hi,

I have been on a search for free driver updates for my graphics hardware on my pc but here are the difficulties so far:

1. I cant even locate what needs to be updated - where do I find ALL of my graphics cards/hardware in one spot?
2. Everytime I think I have found a brilliant online tool to do the diagnosing and finding outdated drivers.....they then want to charge me money to do it. I am not a scrooge but I paid big money for the pc and so they should at least update my drivers for free.
3. I have Windows update turned on and so why doesnt it automatically update hardware all the time?

Help needed, thanks.

Hey guys this is what he is looking for a driver for his nvidia g-force graphics when you finish speculating (he he) - Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers
Windows update would have a driver for the intel hd graphics, or go here for the latest - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx

WOW you are new, its a complete driver, and should be OK. Set up a system restore before you install it - type system restore in search (windows logo + s) and select create when the program opens.

I am an old pc user but never had to update drivers before....

so if its a new driver......then do i need to uninstall the old one?

Why do I need to set up a system restore?

System restore is a safe guard - if your have a 800m series graphics on a laptop that's the only one available at this time if you want to wait for the new WHQL driver you can - I'm assuming you have a 800m series graphics? Otherwise just type in the details at the site. When you install the driver you have the choice of a custom install and if you have a previous driver installed you can select clean install and that completely removes the old driver - for future updates.

Since you have uninstalled drivers beforehand, this should be something like a new installation, can't know which parts of old driver are left over, if any. This driver is for video card only, you are going to need drivers for USB and rest of the system. Have to check in Control Panel/ device manager, which drivers are missing, they will be shown as "Unknown device" or with a name but with a red or yellow mark on them. If there's a name of a device in device manager you might be able to update / install it thru it's properties if it's connected to internet a the time.

No, I have not uninstalled drivers before.

I am in control panel...........I see NVIDIA Control Panel - I right click on it..........no options except open and create a shortcut?

Hang on, i open it and see in the Global settinsg tab "manage update" - a window pops up and says an update is available so I followed that and am downloading it now.

Why is it sitting there available when my updates is set to automatic?

Ok so now its starting to install. I opted for custom and its giving me choices:

Graphics driver - ticked
Nvidea GE force experince
Physx system software

Then at the bottom its asking if I want a clean installation with a check box - it says it will delet stuff like profiles - what does that mean?

"Profiles" is just what it says. Profiles could be made and/or downloaded so it sets different parameters like OC or color, light and other staff for particular programs or mostly games. I think you will be best off with letting install anew.

Profiles are settings you have personalised, since you haven't ventured that way you can ignore loosing your profiles, as you haven't created any. Make sure you use the clean install to delete the beta driver when the next WHQL driver is available to install.

But should I have "Physx system software" ticked....is this malware?
Yes let that install too, it's required for some games made to work best with nVidia cards even if you don't have on of that make.

ok so have installed - couple of things:

1. why when it was set to automatic update, did it not just do this?
2. Can I delete the installer now after it has done its thing?
3. What about my other drives - are they set to automatic and why are they not updating with windows update?

My movie maker works now so thanks....

Why was nividea set to automatic updates but didnt do it automatically? Forget this its just settings in g force experience that are confusing - you have to learn somehow, and experimenting is usually the best means so you set up system restore points if you think its necessary, however, with setting you can do what you like just set them back to default if you mess up.

Can I remove the utility now? There is no need to remove the Gforce Experience Utility if it isn't causing you problems. Open Program and Features and uninstall it there if it is.

Doesnt windows operating system include drives for different componenets of windows? No just folders

I didnt say dont update and I dont think anybody told me not to.....? Forget your problems your good to go - enjoy yourself, Im not sure what you mean. If it G Force Experience forget it, or explore the menus, and find out why. Don't make problems for yourself - don't fix it if it ain't broke.

A lot of people confuse "DRIVES (like in HDD,SSD)" And "DRIVERS" ( software that provides connection between hardware and operating system). Drivers usually come with programs for tweaking drivers like AMD "CCC" (Control Center) or "Realtek HD Audio manager" for sound. They are usually more comprehensive than Windows counterparts. That's just another reason to install "proper" manufacturer's DRIVERS instead of pretty basic ones that come with Windows or thru their updates. Windows driver updater uses only MS database of drivers, doesn't go looking at manufacturer's sites. If you look for drivers updates thru Device manager, more often than not, it will tell you that drivers are up to date even if they are few generations behind . Than there are windows components like Direct X, Direct Draw, Direct Sound etc that proper and newer drivers update too.
