Five Things Microsoft Should Fix in Windows 8 to Prevent Another Vista

As a Microsoft MVP, a fan of Microsoft in general, and a lover of Windows 7, I have looked forward to Windows 8 with great anticipation. But, the more time goes on, the more concerned I am about just how successful the launch of this OS will be, and I’m not alone. There are many bloggers, analysts, and experts out there who have Microsoft’s best interests at heart, and feel that Windows 8 as it stands today is not ready for prime time.

Of course, the Windows 8 Consumer Preview we’re using today is a pre-release version that isn’t intended for prime time. But, there’s also a reason Microsoft isn’t calling it a “beta”. Microsoft is still making tweaks and adjustments, but in general the belief is that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is essentially “feature complete”, and the final version will not be much different than what we have now.

More fully developed Integrity Check. System File Checker is a relatively simple utility. I would like to see a sophisticated utility that is able to check the default integrity of the MBR, Windows registry, policies, services, ASLR, DEP, SEHOP, WMI, DCOM, CAPI2, Security Center, Firewall, Visual C++, .Net Framework, Oracle Java, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader and other third-party dependencies, etc. This utiility should have the ability to restore all file associations including EXE, COM, BAT, VBS and CMD to default values. Detection of rootkits like Mebroot, Sinowal, etc. should be native to the operating system.

That is pretty much what the smarter ones on forums like this have been saying for months.

No harm in him repeating it, the more often it is said, the better.

He say the same thing as me about grouping tiles in a folder, but what he said about the non-possibility for a tablet to join a domain is another Microsoft Windows 8 non sense. I understand they will have a light version similar to Windows 7 starter edition, but tablets need access to a Pro version and the possibility to join a domain. If a Wintel can't join a domain, why not use use Google Apps in a business ? You save on the cost of Microsoft Office, you have access to your email and docs everywhere and you can use an Android tablet too, why not? Microsoft is not the only one in cloud business.

I wonder if that means what I think it means... The Domain system is heavily dependant on the registry, no?

What's the point ...

What's the point of a Windows tablet, if it can't join a Windows network?
Why would businesses buy them?

Maybe it only applies to WOA tablets.
Perhaps they'll only come with "vendor-locked" networks.

I own a business and I will have a use for it. In my case a Windows Tablet will be something very useful to bring to a customer’s place instead of a notebook, I use an Android one for now, when I repair a PC in my shop, I have the work order on it, if I'm at a customer place I move my tablet from desk to desk with me, far more friendly to move than a Notebook, I also use the tablet to Google info I need, but in my shop if I use a Windows Tablets, I will need connectivity with my domain.
Now if only the WOA tablet will not log to a domain I don’t have problem, but if all the tablets can’t do it, better continue to use my Android one.

If MS makes all those changes the guy in the article suggested, it would ruin the entire 8 project - and I mean as MS sees it, not as users see it. I know we're months away from release, but even at this point it would be like trying to turn an aircraft carrier on a dime. Ain't gonna happen, is my prediction based on past company behavior. MS will just have to live with the results of a not-well-thought-out release.

I agree. Expecting MS to make those changes would be a little like suddenly putting your car in reverse gear while going at 60 miles an hour. Yes, I do wish that MS would have had a little more foresight in developing Windows 8. The ideas put forth above make a lot of sense.

MS have been fully aware of those for a long while.

They certainly got lots of feedback indicating much of that from the WDP - and they probably already knew, anyway.

The direction they have chosen is deliberate.

Finally something interesting to talk about. What does happen when you put your car in reverse while going forward at 60 MPH? What about pulling the parking brake? I've wondered about these things all my life.

Oh man, I knew a guy who suddenly jacked his car into reverse while going forward about 15 mph (actually, it was his mom's car) and it was the most horrific screeching I've ever heard a piece of machinery make. As for the parking brake, you can do this:

Hi there
C'mon guys get real.
While this stuff perhaps should be built into the internals -- the average Joe doesn't know or even care what all this techno gabble means.

He wants the OS up and running with a nice slick interface.

I'm sure even Marketing at Ms would have a real nightmare if a commercial appeared on TV with the Logo -- Buy Windows 8 as it's Rootkit Free. -- The average person would assume it's a drug or some nasty ingredient removed from the cooking processes of a Big Mac.

It's quite simple really -- just produce a decent slick looking sellable product to the consumers while obviously improving it as much as possible.

For techno developers things like development kits etc can be sold as "add ons" such as Visual Studio etc. Keep the technical side separate from the User experience -- of course some users are "developers" but the two functions shouldn't get in the way of each other.

I think we can safely say however that the Metro system needs to be "tarted up" considerably before getting any mass consumer appeal.

I'll bet that in the long term W8 IS a success --I'm already regarding W7 as a bit ancient !!! even though it's an EXCELLENT OS.

To crawfish -- the answer to your question is probably the same as that posed by the Late Sir Isaac Newton -- What happens when an irresistable force meets an immoveable block. ?.

cheers
jimbo

Maybe MS should strip them all out, after all no-one needs them. ;)
