Finding my folders and files

Having mastered XP and previous M/S OS's over the years, I'm floored at the complexity and confusion of 8.1, and if there was ANY alternative to MicroSoft, I would gladly take it and pay for it.

I'm an author. In XP I had my files and folders. Now, I have no idea where my files (Word, etc.) are going. I am finding my files in:

  • This PC/Documents
  • Homegroup/(my name)/pc/Documents/c:Users/(my name)
  • Homegroup/(my name)/pc/Documents/c:Users/(my name)/Skydrive
  • OneDrive/Documents
  • Desktop/(my name)/Documents

When I save a Word document, it defaults to something called:
  • (my name)'s OneDrive/Documents

but it calls it:
  • One Drive-Personal/Skydrive/Documents

Could someone give me some advice re: how to just have one set of files and folders, like I had in XP? I'd gladly pay you ...

Also, I had heard that by clicking in the upper left corner of the screen, I could get to an area more like the State section of XP, but I am not finding this.

THANK YOU - Tony in Arizona

The actual folders are in C:\Users\(your user name)\. The Libraries will link to those folders. HomeGroup does too I think, I don't use HomeGroup and always leave the HomeGroup that's created automatically so there is no HomeGroup. If you open the Charms Bar (Windows logo key + C), click Settings > Change PC Settings > One Drive. Then turn "Save documents to OneDrive By default" Off. All your files will then be saved locally.

C:\Users\yourname\Documents, is the default ,and the most or all the rest are shortcuts to this location .excpt for the skydrive one .you can stop the files from going to skydrive and home group ,if you don't use either .check the kink below ,good luck any Question just ask

Not sure what you mean, but there are programs that return much of the classic functionality to Win8/8.1. I use Classic Shell, which takes me directly to the desktop, restores the Start Menu, and more.

Right click your taskbar and select properties. Then under the Navigation tab checkmark "When I click the upper-left corner, switch between recent apps". Likely not what your looking for but that's all I know of with reference to clicking that corner of the screen.

I REALLY appreciate your taking the time to reply. Having said that, I tried to turn of the auto-saving to SkyDrive (or One Drive, or whatever). I went to settings, but then there is no PC Settings and I was unable to search for anything that would turn this (feature?) off. This is typical of my experience with 8.1. For instance, Disk Clean - fairly straightforward, right? Try doing a search on Disk Clean and then clicking on one of the choices. With 90% of them, you will NEVER get to the place where you can simply activate Disk Clean ...

Ops, it's Charms Bar > Settings > Change PC Settings ( bottom of the screen). On the Start Screen it's just PC Settings. If open the Start Screen and just type PC settings it should show up in the list to the right of the screen. Assuming your running Windows 8.1. It may not be on the Start Screen in 8.0. It was added to the Start Screen at some point, I just don't remember exactly when.

Do you mean Disk Cleanup? It's at the top of my search list if I type Disk cleanup on the Start Screen.
Try this
Charms Bar > Settings > Change PC Settings > Search and apps > Use Bing to search online > set to off.
