when on file explorer, you could go to a file in the current folder by pressing its first character, for example if i pressed "r" it selected the readme.txt file

this behaviour has changed now on my windows 8.1 , it starts using the search function

is there a way to go back to the previous behaviour? i'm not sure if this happened because of an update, or after i used my account on a windows 10 machine

See the Search hilighted in the Ribbon. Microsoft is updating the search function on 8, because not all devices can run 10.

no options there, the search tab appears after pressing the character, but there are not options there except for what to search

I am going to have to look at my wife's laptop, since she is still using 8.1. That is odd.

The only real info I can find is about further embedding Bing into Search to make it "Smarter".

Under Search, change it from "All Folders" to "Current Folder".
