so I am using a laptop with switchable graphics card and I am just wondering if this is normal.

these are the temps before putting heavy load on the gpu

gputemp1.PNG

then these are the results after

gputemp2.PNG

I noticed that the fans are always at 35% and it does not rev up even when the GPU is loaded

Am I frying my hardware? I never changed any fan setting or something (the laptop does not have settings/software for it)

Fan controllers go by temperature, not load, if your temps are good, fans should not increase rpm.
Although, some measurement results do look screwy, GPU fan At 10334 rpm, ??? Which program are you using for monitoring ?

I use HWinfo

btw that test lasted for like 5 mins,

If I play for hours, temps can increase to 70 degrees and for such a thin little thing like this im a bit worried

Which GPU do you have ? Try : MSI Afterburner and see if it would show results better or even let you control fans.

yeah I have that one, too

when I start a game the fan speed registers at around 500-1800 rpm

then at 60 degrees and above it throttles down

fanspeed.PNG
is it okay to tinker with the fan speeds?

EDIT: I guess it tries to maintain 65 degrees? i noticed the fans speed up if the temp goes up 65

is that temperature range normal?

If it would let you, go ahead, just don't lower it. It works differently on different GPUs, some get more options some less. I do have a MSI video card and still don't have all the options.
Which GPU do you have there ? AMD for instance has direct fan control in latest 14.2 Driver control center.

it's actually a switchable graphics card

Radeon HD8530M

asus has not released any catalyst update so im stuck

but whenever i try to install the latest mobility drivers with the ccc it recognizes it as r5 m240

You don't really need Asus for that. According to Download Drivers v14.2 should work.
I chose: Notebook graphics/ Radeon HD Series/ Radeon HD8xxxM/ Windows 8.1 x64 and it offered to download 14.2 drivers. Those two graphic cards may share same GPU and that's why it's cross referencing to R5 240m. AMD has rebranded some video cards to Rx xxx. For instance, my R7 260 is rebranded from HD7790, all except for it's BIOS is exactly the same on both of them. Manufacturers (like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte etc) don't usually offer newest drivers which can be had from AMD.

that was what I did last time and it didnt really work properly

I mean the graphics was being detected as 2 separate graphic cards - intel HD4000 and R5 240m but the catalyst control center will not open

additionally, the screen will constantly flicker at times and a notification balloon pops up saying display adapter has recovered successfully or something like that.

If I'm not mistaken, you have an I3 processor with graphic (4000) on the chip and a separate AMD mobile card.

that is correct i have intel graphics and amd

switchable graphics though, not separate. or they are separate? im not sure...

They sure are, Intel is on same chip as processor and AMD is either separate piece or less likely on the MB. Considering those symptoms, computer is having hard time deciding which to use. 4000 should be used for 2D and simple tasks and AMD is supposed to jump in for 3D and other heavy uses.

that's usually what I do I use 4000 for simple word processing and typing and HoMM 3

amd is for Unity3D and stuff

also I try to immediately assign a graphics adapter to a program right after installing it

aaaaand i guess it's also worth mentioning that I always set my power plan to Maximum Performance, although I thoroughly tweaked the settings so not everything will be run at the AMD graphics, just the assigned ones. Would this be causing strain to the system?

If you are using laptop as a "normal" PC, might as well set it run on that AMD GPU as that Intel one is there mostly to conserve battery.

Very well. Thank you CountMike for responding to my posts :D

One final question: How do I add reputation?

Edit: Nvm, found it

No problem, try it like that on one GPU and see what happens.
