How to Set and Manage Family Safety Time Limits in Windows 8 and 8.1

This tutorial will show you how to set and manage time limits in Family Safety for your child's (standard user) account in Windows 8.

You can specify hours when your children are allowed to sign in to the PC, and even set different time limits for each day. If a child is signed in when their allotted time ends, they'll be signed out automatically.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to set and manage Family Safety settings in Windows 8.





OPTION ONE

To Manage Family Safety Time Limits Locally in Windows 8


1. If you have not already, you will need to setup and turn on Family Safety for the child's (standard user's) user account in Windows 8.​
2. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Family Safety icon.​
3. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.​
4. Click/tap on a listed child's (standard user) account that you would like to manage time limits for. (see screenshot below)​

5. Under Windows settings, click/tap on Time limits. (see screenshot below)​

6. Do either step 7 and/or 8 below for what you would like to do.​
7. To Set the Number of Hours a Standard User can Use the PC per Day
A) Click/tap on Set time allowance, then do either step 7B or 7C below. (see screenshot below)​

B) To Allow User to Use the PC All Day
  • Select (user) can use the PC all day, and go to step 7D below. (see screenshot below step 7C)
OR
C) To Allow User to Only Use the PC for the Amount of Time You Allow
  • Select (user) can only use the PC for the amount of time I allow. (see screenshot below)
  • Set how many hours and minutes to allow the user during the weekdays and weekends. (see screenshot below)

D) In the left pane, click/tap on Curfew, and go to step 8B or 8C below. (see screenshot above)​
8. To Set the Time of Day a Standard User can Use the PC
A) Click/tap on Set curfew, and do steps 8B or 8C below. (see screenshot below step 7A)​
B) To Allow User to Use the PC All Day
  • Select (user) can use the PC all day, and go to step 9 below. (see screenshot below step 8C)
OR
C) To Allow User to Only Use the PC During the Time Ranges You Allow
  • Select (user) can only use the PC during the time ranges I allow. (see screenshot below)
  • To block hours, click/tap on a white box, or click/tap and hold and drag over a group of white boxes and release, to mark it blue for each half hour of each day that you want to block. (see screenshot below)
  • To unblock hours, click/tap on a blue box, or click/tap and hold and drag over a group of blue boxes and release, to mark it white for each half hour of each day that you want to unblock. (see screenshot below)

9. When finished, you can close Family Safety, or click on User Settings in the left pane to manage other settings for this user.​





OPTION TWO

To Manage Family Safety Time Limits Online Anywhere at Family Safety Website


1. If you have not already, you will need to setup and turn on Family Safety for the child's (standard user's) user account in Windows 8.​
2. Do either step 3 or 4 below for how you would like to sign in to the Family Safety website.​
3. In Windows 8, do steps 2-3 in OPTION ONE above, click/tap on the Manage settings on the Family Safety website option, and go to step 5 below. (see screenshot below)​

OR
4. From any computer, sign in to the Family Safety website in your web browser, and go to step 5 below.​
5. Click/tap on Edit settings for the standard user that you want to manage time limits for. (see screenshot below)​

6. Click/tap on Time limits, then do either step 7 or 8 below for what you would like to do.​
NOTE: From here, you will also see what your current settings are for this user.​

7. To Set the Number of Hours a Standard User can Use the PC per Day
A) Click/tap on the Allowance tab, then do either step 7B or 7C below. (see screenshot below)​

B) To Allow User to Use the PC All Day
  • Click/tap on the Turn on box to uncheck it, click/tap on the Save button, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below step 7A)
OR
C) To Allow User to Only Use the PC for the Amount of Time You Allow
  • Click/tap on the Turn on box to check it. (see screenshot below step 7A)

  • Click\tap on the Turn on box to check it. (see screenshot below step 8A)
  • To block hours, click/tap on a white box, or click/tap and hold and drag over a group of white boxes and release, to mark it blue for each half hour of each day that you want to block. (see screenshot below step 8A)
  • To unblock hours, click/tap on a blue box, or click/tap and hold and drag over a group of blue boxes and release, to mark it white for each half hour of each day that you want to unblock. (see screenshot below step 8A)
  • When finished, click/tap on the Save button, and go to step 9 below. (see screenshot below step 7A)
9. You can now close the Family Safety website, or click on another setting in the left pane you would like to change.​
