External HDD showing as local disk

Hi everyone

I've been using this hard drive for a while, and now all of a sudden I cannot access it. Under My Computer, it is referenced by Local Disk (G: ). Usually, it says Seagate Expansion (G: ). When I left or right click on the disk, Windows Explorer freezes. I have tried changing the letter of the drive by using Disk Management,however Disk Management gets stuck while saying "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service...".

Any suggestions on how I can access my hard drive? Data is very important

I would try another cable first, or another USB port. Chances drive is going bad or already is.

When in the past you disconnect this drive did you use Safely Remove Hardware icon in notification area? If not can damage the partition on the drive. Ever used on a different PC ? Saying local disk does not mean drive is bad, somehow seagate name was erased by incorrect shutdown, windows seeing the drive differently.

Can try Seatools here
Downloads | Seagate Check SMART status of the drive and health. Any way take a screen shot of when plugged in and disk management is open, without trying anything with the drive.

I have tried two other cables already and all of the usb ports on my laptop. I have also tried the drive on another pc and it also shows up as local disk. I do not think it is the harddrive because it is relatively new. I had bought it in December last year and I do not use it frequently. When opening disk management with the drive plugged in it gives me a blank page and says "Connecting to virtual disk Service" at bottom of the page. Please see screenshot struggle.jpg .
I will install the Seatools now and check drive status and health

Yes, but does it work on another PC ? See what seatools tells you. Something does not look right in Disk management as to were other drives are or how and what you are doing in there.

I had that "Connecting to virtual disk Service" message show up when I was running a RAID setup. It took a while but eventually Disk Management loaded OK. Even new tech breaks. It doesn't happen very often but it does happen. If the data is important, as a last resort you could open it up and remove the hard drive. If it's just the USB interface part that has died you could still recover what's on the drive. Assuming its a SATA drive inside the enclosure. You won't now until you open it up. If it's still under warranty you'll have to make a decision on new drive or recover data.

I just plugged it in another pc and it does not work. I am still waiting for the seatools to finish installing. I also opened disk management tool now again to see if it would eventually load.

Yes this was part that was incomplete as to answer does it work on other PC, now we know and as possibly thought drive is bad even though it is not old. Chances for warranty then. Could of been done to not properly removed as stated before, when disconnecting the drive or just a faulty drive to begin with, a lemon.

If it was just not safely removed, that would just be a corrupted file system. That should be an easy fix via disk management. Repartition, reformat. You'll know if its dead in disk management or diskpart if you get IO errors or other weird messages when you try to do anything to it.

Yeah i also think this is happening because of not removing the drive safely. I had a look at the drive using the minitool partition wizard and it shows all the properties of the drive. Is there anything I can do to retrieve the data without opening the hdd? I am almost certain now it is because of a damaged file system.

If it is a corrupted file system, removing the drive will not help much, if at all. I have never used any Data recovery software and wouldn't know what to recommend, sorry. Those services cost money, big money. I don't know if there is any free fully functional software out there. Maybe start a new thread asking for data recovery advise to get those in the know to respond. Or do a forum search for "data recovery" and see what turns up.

Yes i was not sure the damage occurred by not removing safely was only due to damaging the files on the drive, reformat would still be not the option you wanted to use as it still would loose all contents of the drive, so by not removing safely in future is something to remember, even if not the cause now. I to am not familiar with Data recovery to suggest any, but i would also google it and if it is even possible with this drive.

Your welcome. Windows 8.1 usually done by right clicking drive, check for errors under tools tab, also chkdsk used then in command prompt by switching to the external drive if possible with way it is acting, not recognized.
