The explorer bar disappeared and could not be restored. I did View --> Explorer bars --> Favorites. What could be wrong?

If talking about the ribbon bar : Right Click on View > Uncheck Minimize the Ribbon.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3034-windows-explorer-minimize-ribbon-windows-8-a.html

If talking about the adress bar : You need to unlock the toolbar, then drag the adress bar back
If this is a PC where Group Policies are applied then the adress bar can be disabled/enabled via GPC.
Thanks for your reply.
My question is about Internet Explorer. Presently there is no left side pane where the favorites are displayed.

Did you unlock the toolbar ? Right click on it then uncheck lock the toolbars.
The favorites pane can be enabled via the star button (top right, next to adress bar)

That solved the problem. Thank you very much for your help.
It is sort of puzzling that I never had this problem even though I used IE for so many years.

Probably because they moved the Favorites from the left side to the right side. That confuses a lot of people.

My IE is version 10 and the Favorites bar comes on the usual left side. Is it version 11 as shown on oneeyed's post?

Maybe there is a confusion about the word 'favorites bar'. I was talking about the favorites like in the picture - which btw you can move to the left with the little green arrow.

I meant "Explorer bar" instead as stated on my thread starter post. The explorer bar is an area where a list of favorites or folders are shown. The explorer bar is on the *right* side on oneeyd's post which I have never seen before.

Getting back to my original problem. That problem has been solved as previously reported. But now I am seeing the same problem on another machine. This time it appears that I am unable to turn on the Explorer bar even the check mark on "Lock the tool bar" is removed.
I noticed that IE is hijacked by a malware so I unintalled it but the problem remains.

Usually after virus's are removed you will have some type of system file corruption.

Try following the directions in the following link that show you how to scan the system files and repair them.

sfc /scannow returned "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation"

Now situation has gotten worse: I can no longer get anywhere in the Internet by IE or FFox even though the Network and Sharing Center shows internet connection.

You might try running a few more virus scan's. Try using Windows defender as well.

I'd also think about running Download CCleaner 4.08.4428 - FileHippo.com

No telling how many viruses or how much damage they did and I doubt it got them all. Once the browser is high jacked you would also want to return the browser to default settings. In IE that's internet options , advanced tab, reset button.

For the browser off line problem try running the IPReset file below which will reset the network stack and flush the DNS etc. your machine will reboot automatically.

If you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all it would also be helpful. :)

First off, ability to browse internet by IE or FFox came back last night without doing anything.

This morning I did the following:
Virus scanning by Defendor
Running CCleaner
Resetting IE
Running IPReset
Executing Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth on Command promp

I could get the explorer bar by Alt+C short-cut key or clicking the star icon on the title bar.
Remaining problem is I cannot turn on menu bar, favorites bar, etc. : The menu displayed by clicking the title bar does not contain Menu bar, Favorites bar, and so forth. What are displayed include Restore, Move, Size, etc.

What I can do now is restoring one of those old restore points. And if that does not work restoring the system backup. Is there any other thing I should try before doing any of the above?

Most likely just reinstalling IE10 will fix this problem. Microsoft has a link just for this.

Another possibility is a false entry in the registry. Open the Registry ( Start> Run> regedit) and find the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Toolbar.
In the subkey 'Web Browser' delete by right click-> Delete the entire entry 'ITBarLayout' and restart the computer.

If this problems appears on windows xp machine, there is a fix on this page Restore Show Desktop Icon.

Always make a registry backup first to be sure.

The registry tric suggested by lifetec did not cure the problem.
Reinstalling IE did not change the problem situation either. The process appears simply turning it off and on again so it does not seems to be a complete clean reinstall.
Any other idea other than restoring a restore point or the system backup?
