Solved Excel Chart Rename Cell help needed

I should probably quit trying to do new things with Excel but everything opens a new door.

I finally learned to make a chart. Change the title. Even rename Series 1 , 2 & 3 at bottom.

BUT, for the life of me I cannot figure out how to rename the cells labeled 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 & 5 at the bottom. And I know it is easy.

Here it is and I appreciate you or someone else looking at it.
Mainly what I want to do is rename 1 to Income , 2 to Bills then Personal Money , Paid , Actual Personal Money & Over / Short.

I can rename 1 but then the rest disappear. And if I start over, rename 3 instead of 1 , it changes the name on 1 and 2-6 disappear again. I may not know how to spell krazzee but I know how it feels.

Ok, here you go. It's a bit convoluted, but it works.

1. Click on C2 and type Income
2. Click on the chart
3. Click on Chart Filters (the 3rd icon down, representing a funnel)
4. Click on Select Data...
5. In the dialogue box Chart data range: (already highlighted), edit it to read as follows: =Sheet1!$C$2:$G$2,Sheet1!$C$4:$G$8
6. Click OK
7. Click on Chart Filters and Select Data... again
8. Refer to the panel headed Legend Entries (Series)
9. Click on Series1 and then Edit
10. In the Series name: dialogue box (the cursor should already be flashing there), type =(Sheet1!$D$1)
11. Click OK
12. Repeat steps 9-11 for each of the other names to be added, remembering to use the correct data reference in step 10 (2=E, 3=F, and 4=G)

It's not quite as convoluted as Dwarf posted. You need all of the chart headings in a row or columns as you want them. I inserted the text "Income" into cell C2 and used the rest of column C as the chart headings. Next, click on the chart to select it, then click on Chart Tools, then click on "Select Data". A "Select Data Range" dialog will appear. Click on "Edit" under the Horizontal Axis labels and in the range box that pops up enter "=(Sheet1!$C$2,Sheet1!$C$4,Sheet1!$C$5,Sheet1!$C$6,Sheet1!$C$7,Sheet1!$C$8)" then click OK, then OK again and Voila, your chart labels have been changed.

Alternatively, instead of simply entering the text into the range box that pops up, you could click on the little spreadsheet icon and then hold down the Ctrl key and click on cells C2, C4, C5, C6, C7 and C8 then press Enter.

Note: This is using Excel 2007, not sure which version you are using. It works the same in Excel 2013, I didn't try 2010.
