Ethernet Through-the-walls Questions

Currently, I have had all this up and running for years, with exposed cables hanging across the ceiling and draped around here and there; it ain't too pretty, but it works.

I was considering routing eight individual Ethernet cables from point A to point B, requiring about fifty feet per cable.

All of these cables will start at a multi-port "Switch" near the Modem and Router.

Then I thought --- why not run a single cable the fifty feet and put a switch at the destination ?

Either way, there is going to be a switch; so, it is either eight fifty-foot cables with the switch at the starting point, or a single fifty-foot cable with the switch at the destination end; which will yield the best results ?

Unless you are routinely transferring multi gigabit files around then just send one cat6/7 cable and put a switch at the end - this is all I ever do.

I already had it all figured out and about to order a bunch of cables and then this switch idea soaked through just as I was about to commit the order.

I just now ordered a switch to put at the termination end, a ten-pack of short cables, and a single long cable.

Running a single cable is going to be a piece of cake compared to running eight.

Another advantage of the switch/short cables scenario, as compared to the individual long cables plan, is that more likely than not, when plugging a long cable that is routed through the walls directly into a device, that flimsy little retainer is going to snap, and there I am with a hard-to-replace cable with a loose connection.

By having the inexpensive, easily replaced, short cables between a switch and the devices, if one breaks, it isn't something to go over the hill talking to one's self about.

The wife is going to be so proud of me for finally getting this rat's nest taken care of.
