Edit the Power User Tasks Menu

It is a strange thing.

It pops up where the start menu used to be - but offers only a tiny fraction of what the start menu offered.

Peculiar.

Indeed. It almost seems like an afterthought and in some ways, a concession for those missing the Start menu. However, while the base menu, which has been discussed elsewhere here, is pretty simple, the ability to customise outlined here, does seem to offer a little more of interest.

Apparantly Vishal has found a way, but he hasn't posted all the details, yet...

LOL that is funny - I have tried a few things - including adding reg entries, additional shortcuts , etc.

I did manage to get one of the existing shortcuts to open regedit by making another folder - copying the existing shortcuts into it - then changing the shortcut target .

Also tried changing the description in the .ini file.

It seemed to work until I messed it all up - can't get it working again now.

I will have a look at the link you posted just now and see what Vishal has discovered.

I went through a similar process, even going so far as trying to manipulate the associated manifest files. I thought I was on to something... until I rebooted  I'm really quite curious to see what's been discovered, I hope he doesn't keep us waiting long...

I solved the problem my own way. I finally made my own folder there and then you can add/delete what you want. http://www.eightforums.com/customization/5274-better-alternative-win-x.html

The difference is, you haven't added any new shortcuts.

Right, not in the version I posted. But I have a new version now with my own folder and added own shortcuts. On the other hand I do not want to overload it.

Would you care to share the method for creating, and keeping after a reboot, new shortcuts, please.

I am not sure I understand the question. I made shortcuts to the desktop as usual (from the program folders I wanted) and moved them into my own folder called "System Folders' which I parked in C:\Users\Wolfgang\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. And this is what I have now after I weeded it out a bit. I have rebooted many times and nothing changed.

So, if you add a new shortcut from any program, not already in one of the standard WinX groups, to a subfolder in WinX, you then select winkey+x to open the 'Power User Tasks Menu' your new shortcut is there and it remains after a reboot. Or are you just adding additional shortcuts to the consolidated group 3 folder on the desktop?

No. I think there is a misunderstanding. I do not use Win+X any more. I go to the folder (as shown above) which I pinned to Start and to the Explorer icon on the taskbar.

I guess you could add additional folders to Group3. But that is too messy because with Win+X you do not get a list that is alphabetically ordered. That was my complaint at the outset why I created this facility which I think is more convenient.

PS: I also like this view:

Ok, thanks for clarifying. It's really the ability to add additional links to the Win+X menu that we're after here, it's something quite a lot of people have been looking into, without success. So, it will be interesting to see what Vishal has come up with.

Yes, I think we were close with our attempts - perhaps Vishal has spotted something we missed and is able to keep it going after reboot.

Ah ha.

I figured it was a hashcheck causing the problem.

Shawn - you will recall we worked around a similar thing for win7 starter desktop background.

I didn't know where this one was hiding - so well done Vishal.
