Dual Boot Windows 7 and Windows 8 - Delete Windows 8

How to Delete "Windows 8" in your Dual Boot with Windows 7 or Vista

information   Information
This tutorial will show you how to delete Windows 8 in your dual boot with Windows 7 or Vista when Windows 7 or Vista was installed first and Windows 8 installed second. This will leave you with only having Windows 7 or Vista installed afterwards.

Part One

Here's How:

1. Start or restart your PC, and boot into Windows 7 or Vista. (see screenshot below)
Step1.jpg

2. In Disk Management, delete the partition that you installed Windows 8 on so that is is now unallocated space. (see screenshots below)
Delete%20Win%208-0001.PNG
Delete%20Win%208-0002.PNG

3. If you like, you could either create a new partition to use with the unallocated space, or extend the Windows 7 or Vista C: drive into the unallocated space to add it back to the C: partition. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This will vary depending on how you have your hard drive setup though.
Delete%20Win%208-0003.PNG

4. When finished, restart your PC and only have Windows 7 or Vista installed and listed in the Windows Boot Manager screen.

Part Two

When you have your Dual boot on a PC with a uEFI setup.

Delete Win 8-0005.PNG

Delete Win 8-0006.PNG

Follow the steps in Part One.

All done.

Shawn,
Ah ha, that answers a couple of questions for me. I didn't even noticed that Theog had written the tutorial.
Thanks and sorry for the confusion on my part.

Sure hope you made a system image backup of your Win 7 before installing Win 8.

I was lucky and had made one so I didn't lose much when the uninstall of Win 8 did not work "as advertised".

You will notice that Shawn's snapshots always show a 100 mb reserved partition.
Karl, I have installed, uninstalled, re-installed and refreshed Win 8 (since 7989) and it's always worked with my dual boot setup.

Then, again, I use a boot disc to reformat and delete partitions. I never do it from within Windows.

Maybe that's the difference?

Shawn,
Had Win 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1 installed and fully uptodate.

Installed Win 8 per your tutorial.

Win 7 in a 50 GB partition
Win 8 in a 50 GB partition with a VHD of 40 GB for the Win 8.

I'm not sure then. I had a setup like that, and it worked on it as well.

Hi Shawn & Karl

Not being in to VM & VHD.

Would putting the VHD on the partition 2 make a difference?

Option Two.

2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the location of the Windows 8 VHD file that you created in step 5 or 6 in OPTION ONE above, then either delete or rename the VHD file.

Hi Ray,

It shouldn't make any difference where the VHD is at. I had mine on a separate physical drive than Windows 7, and was able to delete it like in the tutorial.

And my first post here. Been in sevenforums for quite some time now :)

Just wanted to ask, if you delete the parition, will you still be using the Win8 GUI bootloader or will it revert back to Win7's bootloader?

Thanks Shawn. I'll still be downloading the Consumer Preview. Hope I don't find the UX retarded as most people are describing it.

Off topic though, I like the layout of eightforums compared to sevenforums. :)

After I deleted the partition that I installed Windows 8, why it didn't change back to an unallocated space but a logical drive instead? I can't extend the volume now... Please help! Thanks in advance.

hi there, just want to ask some question here,
I install my windows 7 on C and my windows 8 on my D. if I follow all of this step, does that mean my D will be completely deleted? since I store some of my item on D and it will take a while to copy it on hard disk. and do you know an easy way to upgrade my windows 7 to windows 8 instate of uninstall it 1st then upgrade it through the windows upgrade? I like to use the windows 8 but it seem that all the game and app that I install on windows 7 need to be reinstall back even though I install most of them in E. Sorry for such a dummy question. Thank you.

2 installs of Windows 8?

Hello.
I have a similar issue where it looks like the screen shot at the beginning of the thread. Only there are two windows 8 icons.
There is a short pause during boot up asking which version to boot to. (The default is installed correctly).
When I select the second version there is an error message that it hasn't installed correctly. This is the version I would like to remove.
I checked Disc Management as it has been previously suggested in the thread and there was only one partition on the drive and I can't see from this view what is installed on it.
Any suggestions how I can remove the version that hasn't been installed properly?
Thank you
