Hi guys, my name is Filippo.
I am experiencing a severe problem with my laptop, a pretty new ASUS S550CB. It started two weeks ago and I really cannot figure out what is the cause. The problem is that the laptop is no longer unable to wake up from sleep or hybernation modes. If it goes to sleep, after it wakes up it is able to show the login screen (sometimes) but when you're typing the password it freezes and after a while, a blue screen saying that the computer stopped working due to a Driver Power State Failure is shown. A minidump is saved and the computer is restarted. The whole operation takes a looong time. I also notice that boot times are much longer even when waking up from power off state.

From an initial investigation, the problem seemed to sit in iaStorA.sys (Intel Rapid Start Technology driver) not handing power modes correctly. So I tried to upgrade it to the latest version, and no luck. I tried to uninstall it, and uninstall also the ExpressCache software that the laptop came with, but no luck.
I then installed again first IRST latest driver, no luck. I then added ExpressCache on top of it (as stated in ExpressCache install instructions), no luck.

I do not have a recovery point saved before the problem started to happen (aroud 18 feb). I have tried to uninstall all windows updates received from 15 feb onwards but guess what? No luck as well.

I am terribly stuck and I hope someone can help me get out of this nightmare. The laptop all of a sudden became almost unusable, sleep and hybernation no longer work at all, and the SDD and IRST were a main driver in my choice of buying ASUS S550CB.

I attach to this post the outcome of SF Diagnostic Tool run today.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, I cannot figure out what to try more.
Filippo

Is there any particular reason that you have Secure Boot turned off?
Is there any particular reason that your Bluetooth is disabled?

Where did you get the Intel RST drivers from?
From the Asus website?
From the Intel website?
Which one's did you try?
Have you run a hard drive diagnostic to see if there's a problem with the hard drive? Here's those that I suggest: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please check the list below for any drivers dated prior to the release of Win8.1 (Oct of 2013) and ensure that they are all Win8.1 compatible. In particular, check to ensure that you have the latest, WIn8.1 compatible version of HECIx64.sys (the Intel Management Engine).

If unable to update the drivers, or if the BSOD's continue after updating these drivers, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Hi Usama, I downloaded the RST drivers from Intel website (because I got the suggestion that my other drivers, that came with the laptop, were outdated).
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23496/eng/SetupRST.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=23496&ProductID=2101&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel%C2%AE+RST)
Secure boot and Bluetooth are a result of some test I did. I will re-enable both of them, anyways it seems they have nothing to do with the problem. I have checked the drives with nothing more than a Windows checkdisk, I will try your suggestion of using the Hitachi HD tool to do a deep scan.

I will work with the drivers you suggested and get back to you next.

Thanks so much for your help!!!!

Filippo

Hi, I was unable to find a most updated version of the drivers in red. I have uninstalled Asus Charger Driver and ATK Hotkey ATK0101 ACPI UTILITY, but this didn't help. The problem stays the same.
I attach the updated reports.

I have tried to use driver verifier a couple of days ago... Once activated, I got a crash before Windows loads

Since Dust forbids me from telling to remove antivirus (and disagrees with my methodology) and I have decided not to help out with BSOD threads any longer, I simply cannot tell you that AVG is responsible for causing your crashes involving the Intel storage driver.

Hi MasterChief,
I read about AVG being a potential cause for this elsewhere, but I didn't give it too much of a credibility (or I didn't want to believe, since I use AVG for ages already and I wouldn't like to change to another antivirus). I am now willing to give it a try since I am really pissed off for this BSOD issue.

What about Realtek Card Reader Diver? Is that an alternative solution? Gonna try that upgrade (I have ver. 6.1.8400.27023 installed)

Thanks, will let you know.

If you've used Driver Verifier already - I didn't see any evidence of it in the memory dumps or in the WER section of MSINFO32
And, you relate that the crash occurs early in the boot process (likely before the memory dump collection mechanism has initialized/started).

Two things that load this early on are the Intel RST drivers and the AVG drivers.
But, I'd also wonder about the DiskKeeper drivers from 2012 (a simple way to test them is to remove DiskKeeper temporarily)
And ensure that the Intel Management Engine driver is also 8.1 compatible (I've seen problems with this one).

You may also want to try the Intel Auto-update tool at http://downloadcenter.intel.com

AVG has caused the most BSODs that I have ever seen out of all software, ever. #1. It can and often does affect storage, so it is excellent that it has been removed, but I hope you used the removal tool as well for it, since it leaves behind remnants that still affect operations.

After that is out of the way, I would suggest to uninstall this software for sure, in addition to all that Usasma has said -

Some BSOD's are easy to solve, some aren't.
It appears that we're on the "aren't" side of the spectrum now :0(

One of the tools that I use shows signs of wireless problems in each stack.
I'd suggest getting the latest, Win8.1 compatible drivers for this device (I have seen problems with the Win8 version - but that was a while back).

Don't forget the updates mentioned in the previous 2 posts.

Hi,
I have tried the Intel Auto-update tool at http://downloadcenter.intel.com but it offers me only to update the graphics driver. I have uninstalled DiskKeeper, IRST, AVG, cleaned up with the AVG removal tool, disabled all network adapters... Still the problem keeps happening, the laptop won't exit from sleep mode.
I attach the latest report, please look at the last minidump, that was the cleanest ever configuration I tried.

I don't know what software owns the drivers:
ASMMAP64.sys - if this is supposed to be ATK Hotkey ATK0101, I have already uninstalled such a program.
atkwmiacpi64.sys

so, I have no idea how to remove them. I apologize for my limits...

DptfManager.sys, DptfDevDram.sys, DptfDevGen.sys, DptfDevFan.sys, DptfDevProc.sys: I will now uninstall also the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework.

Filippo

Don't uninstall the atkwmiacpi64.sys driver.
Stop removing things from your system.
Too many changes at one time make it hard to see what's happening to the system.

Your iaStorA.sys driver dates from 2012 - we must get it updated.
If you review the info at the Asus site, they do not want you to uninstall it.

Try these 2 drivers (if the first one installs, don't bother with the second one):

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23538&lang=eng
Select the
File name:
STOR_Win7_8_8.1_12.9.0.1001.exe
Download and install it.

If that doesn't work, then try this one:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...eng&OSVersion=Windows 8*&DownloadType=Drivers
Select the
File name:
SetupRST.exe
Download and install it.

If neither works, post back and we'll try others.
Please let us know the results regardless of what happens

If you are able, please uninstall Virtual Box temporarily. Feel free to reinstall it after the system has been stabilized
If you're not able, please let us know.

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!
    Computer type
    Laptop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    Samsung/NP780
    CPU
Came with the laptop (i7 of some sort)
    Motherboard
Pretty sure that it has one, but haven't checked inside the case!
    Memory
upgraded to 12 gB from 8 gB
    Graphics Card(s)
has switchable - Intel/ATI - Used wrong drivers, now ATI card is inop :( Will have to fix it soon!
    Sound Card
I'm nearly deaf, so this isn't used often
    Monitor(s) Displays
Touchscreen on laptop/32" Toshiba on HDMI (laid the Sharp TV on a mouse and cracked the screen!)
    Screen Resolution
    800x600
    Hard Drives
One Samsung 1tB drive - 5400 rpm. Gonna switch to a 7200/10000 rpm or an SSD (if I can find $500 for a 1tB SSD!)
    - Switched to 500 gB Samsung 840 series SSD - WOW!!!
    PSU
Why do we ask this for laptops?
    Case
Silver with a neat Samsung logo
    Cooling
sub-par, gotta get around to working on it soon Worked on it - still sub-par! :(
    Keyboard
Microsoft Natural - the same one I've used since it orignally came out around 1995
    Mouse
    no Mouse - Trackball!!!!
    Internet Speed
too slow when I'm waiting for a download to finish
    Browser
Yes, I use this (Firefox mostly, w/IE next most)
    Antivirus
    Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
Hi, I have followed directions and installed both files (STOR_Win7_8_8.1_12.9.0.1001.exe which installes the drivers and then, since that didn't fix anything, SetupRST.exe which offered to "repair RST by installing the most updated drivers and files). Ok, done that, the problem is still there. Nothing changed.
I attach the new SF report.
Now, we can see that the RST drivers are these:
iaStorA iaStorA Kernel 28/10/2013 22.15.26
iaStorAV Intel(R) SATA RAID Con Kernel 01/08/2013 02.00.49
iaStorV Intel RAID Controller Kernel 11/04/2011 20.48.16

Let me add something to the discussion:
1) When I go to sleep mode, the laptop takes a considerable amount of time to go off (approx 3 minutes). During this time, the WIFI and Power leds are ON, disk led blinks from time to time, then they go off and the power icon blinks to indicate that the laptop is sleeping.
2) When I click the power on button to exit sleep, the login screen is shown instantly. However, the WIFI icon is OFF (I'd expect it to turn to ON, since that was the state before the sleep) and there is no disk activity at all.
3) After I enter my password, the wait spinner appears for 1-2 minutes. Then the blue screen appears telling about the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and the laptop is restarted.

And also, a couple of questions.
1) After login, a warning appears that "This program can only be executed on ASUS computers". The warning is from a P4 program, this started to happen after I uninstalled ATK Hotkey ATK0101 ACPI UTILITY. I'd re-install it as soon as possible, unless you think this could be a problem.
2) Shall I re-enable windows automatic updates and download and install them? I remind you that I have uninstalled every update done since Feb 15.

Thanks for your help,
Filippo

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
    Computer type
    Laptop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    ASUS S550CB
    Browser
    Firefox
    Antivirus
    AVG
I suspect that some of the things that were uninstalled are causing some problems.

Reinstall the ATK Hotkey ATK0101 ACPI UTILITY

Thanks for the reminder about the Windows Updates. Please install them - they are crucially important.
Install all the optional updates also - but for now skip anything that's not from Microsoft (such as Intel stuff or device drivers).
Let us know what stuff was skipped (it'll give us clues on some of the things we still need to do)

Right now there are these problem devices:
Not Available ACPI\INT3400\2&DABA3FF&2 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0153&SUBSYS_15871043&REV_09\3&11583659&0&20 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available ACPI\INT3402\0 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available ACPI\INT3403\0 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available ACPI\INT3403\1 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available ACPI\INT3403\2 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available ACPI\INT3403\3 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available ACPI\INT3404\0 The drivers for this device are not installed.

I think that Windows Update/the ATK0101 driver will fix most of these, but some of the results of my searches say that it's the Intel Framework. The PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0153 is the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework - please reinstall it.

Once that's done, post another report. I'll be looking at the MSINFO32...Components...Problem Devices section to see what's left.

The memory dumps are essentially the same as previously.
If the Problem Devices section is clear, then I'd like you try Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
If it's not clear, then post back and we'll start to clear it up.

With the Driver Verifier crash, check to see if there's a MEMORY.dmp file in C:\Windows with a date/timestamp around the time of the crash. Also check in C:\Windows\Minidump for a .dmp file with a date/timestamp around the time of the crash.

Frankly, I don't expect much from Driver Verifier - but if we don't try it and we miss something we could be prolonging this unnecessarily.

Once the Driver Verifier has done it's stuff, then we're going to try updating more stuff. In particular I'm concerned about the Intel Management Engine, the wireless card driver, and Virtual Box. But don't try them yet, let's just work our way through the problems and see what we get.

Hi, I have done the following:

- Installed ATK0101, reboot
- Installed all important Windows Updates, reboot
- Installed Intel Thermal Framework, reboot

After installing back ATK0101, I can see that the behavior improved (= get closer to normal): going to sleep now takes 15-20 seconds (and not three minutes). However, waking up still results in BSOD, this time a little differently: after waking up, the wallpaper with clock is shown, then I click a key to go to login, the clock disappears and the laptop hangs, then BSOD and reboot.

I attach report.

I am going to try the driver verifier according to the instructions provided now.

I'll think about uninstalling Intel Virtualization and Virtual Box next (even if I use the latter a lot for work).

Thanks again to everyone,

Filippo

This device still has a problem:
MTP USB\VID_18D1&PID_4E42&MI_00\6&1BEC97CD&0&0000 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Looks to be a Google Nexus device.
I would suggest removing it from the system while we are testing (unplug it).

Virtual Box can be uninstalled temporarily - and then you can install a fresh copy of the latest, Win8.1 compatible version available from the Virtual Box website once the problems are resolved. This is a hunch of mine, it isn't supported by anything other than I see a lot of Virtual Box drivers in memory dumps in both Win8 and 8.1 systems.

I would hold off uninstalling it until we see what Driver Verifier has to say.
Because of the problems that you're having, it's very important for us to proceed methodically - and not jump around all willy-nilly trying to fix everything at once.

No significant change in the memory dumps.....

With Driver Verifier enabled, as I noticed before, I cannot get to the login screen when I boot. Right before the login screen is shown, the laptop crashes, BSOD saying DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION.
I had to revert to a restore point I saved just before enabling it to be able to boot.

Ok, then I check in the c:\windows directory and I see a MEMORY.DMP but the date is not compatible with DV crash (it dates back to yesterday). I attach the usual report, so you can see the minidump of the crash with DV enabled (030714-146031-01.dmp). I am uploading the MEMORY.DMP on Dropbox, will post the link when it's done (128 MB zipped).

If you have issues after (and only after), please let us know. BSODs do not care about what you need, what you don't need or how much you need it/them. If we find the issue persists, well then that's another story and stuff is out of the way, to continue.
