For a decent while now (several months, though I don't remember specifically), my graphics card has been crashing with pixelated graphics. Attached is a picture of what the graphics artifact looks like, though this is just from google. I can post a pic of my own computer once it happens again.

I have a GTX 470, and when this problem started, I upgraded to the 275ish driver set. It mostly went away at that time, but a month or so later, it came back. It happens the most when I have been playing a game (minecraft or Guild Wars, specifically) on one monitor and watching TV on my other.

Then the Windows 8 Dev Preview came out. There were few changes, at first, but I updated to the 290 driver set and it mostly went away. I installed the consumer preview somewhere in there, and it stayed fairly stable. Then it happened again a week or so ago, and it happened a lot. I cleaned out my computer with some canned air (took about 1.5 cans because I'd let it get disgustingly dusty) and the problem disappeared again.

Now I'm running the Guild Wars 2 Beta, and (surprise surprise) it happens again. Now it's just from running the game, even without playing video on my other monitor (before, it would almost never happen unless I was playing video while gaming). It can happen within 5 minutes of loading the game, or after as long as an hour.

Somewhere in all that, I started running EVGA Precision. It helped a lot, too. I'm still using it (and upgraded to Precision X yesterdayish), but it doesn't make much of a difference now. This doesn't seem related to overheating, because the card doesn't get above 70C-ish.

tl;dr my games like to look like this v

I also attached the minidump collected by w8 file collector. Any ideas what's going on here?

Thanks

EDIT: It's worth noting that these events aren't necessarily 100% accurate, but get the gist of how they happened.

Hi,

Video driver crashing. To fix -

Delete these then reboot:

Sorry, feeling a bit nubbish. Delete what, exactly? Video card drivers? I can test that if that's what you mean, but I've done clean installs before.

Thanks for the quick reply.

No, delete the files shown then reboot. While you're at it following the above, also uninstall the overclocking utility:

RTCore64 RTCore64.sys Wed May 25 02:39:12 2005

Yup, you're welcome. Have fun gaming... :)

Hm... I'm going to see what happens without uninstalling RTCore64.sys, because that is from EVGA Precision, and it seems unlikely that that would cause an issue. If it does happen again, I'll delete it, and keep this thread updated. With how often it's been happening, I suspect I'll know more by tomorrow.
Thanks again

This isn't a "test" I set up for you and I am also not guessing.

If you follow everything as shown, the machine will be well. Otherwise, there are no guarantees. With following, there is.

Sure thing, yep. Very welcome.

I removed everything but rtcore, and it still failed. Then I removed rtcore and made sure everything was gone (it wasn't). Now it definitely is all gone. It still fails. I installed an older driver set (295), and it still fails. As far as I can tell, performance hasn't changed during all this.

Install this driver to update (latest is best to have instead of reverting):

Code:
nvlddmkm nvlddmkm.sys Thu Feb 09 21:02:58 2012

NVIDIA GeForce 301.24 Beta 64-bit download from Guru3D.com (Edit: Fixed link)

If there are any crush dumps with this, please post them. Otherwise, excellent job with removing the drivers with issues.

I would also update the motherboard bios to latest, for good measure, because your drivers are now "clean".

With a little side note: After bios update, I would temporarily disable virtualization in the bios. This is because you have a driver I have not seen yet (usually not a good sign) and this will disable it for the time being. Now yes, this part is a test, if it becomes necessary after all of the above is completed.

Yep, almost forgot to mention - set Optimized Defaults in the bios and save, after the bios update. If there is no update, then still set it anyway.

Yup, still crashed. Taking it step by step; I'll look into updating BIOS tomorrow.

The NVIDIA driver I linked to was not installed well yet. From the latest crash dump:

nvlddmkm nvlddmkm.sys Thu Feb 09 21:02:58 2012 (4F347AD2)

---------

Yes, it is very important to update bios to latest, set Optimized Defaults in it, and then also (temporarily) disable the virtualization.

It definitely can not hurt to physically inspect the card for the fan to be working well under load.

You have a rare type of thing going on, that very much is behaving like a software problem, but we have taken care of that already (minus the NVIDIA change still needed, and the virtualization driver I've never seen before, being disabled from the bios.)

With following well, we can and will eliminate all possibilities.

So it's 2 months later. In that time, I bricked my BIOS (as mentioned above), bought a new BIOS chip, got a replacement for the new one since it didn't work, and got my system running. There has only been one GW2 beta event since then, and I didn't have time to play in it, but I'm playing in the stress test now, so I'm hitting the DPC_WATCHDOG_EXCEPTIOn for the first time (that I remember) since then.

Attached is the new dump.

You had a series of memory dumps on 8/9 June, and then another series on 27 June.
I'm running all of them - but there may be some differences between the 2 sets since there's a 3 week gap between BSOD's.

Win7 doesn't like wireless USB devices - so I have to presume that the same thing is true of Win8.
Test by uninstalling the software and removing the device from your system.
I'd suggest either using a wireless card that plugs into your motherboard, or a very long ethernet cable (this is only temporary - until you either prove or rule out a problem with the wireless USB device).

It looks like you have at least 5 hard drives. What's the make, model, and wattage of your Power Supply?

Any particular reason that you haven't updated to the Windows 8 Release Preview yet?

Lot's and lot's of STOP 0x117 errors (video) in June (in the WER section of MSINFO32). These are very similiar to STOP 0x116 errors and are troubleshot (?troubleshooted?) in the same way. Here's instructions for Win7 - Win8 should be the same: STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting - Windows 7 Forums

Memory dump errors primarily point to video issues. Most important (IMO) is an upgrade to the Release Preview. Next most important is installing the latest version of the nVidia Windows 8 drivers for you video card: World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies | NVIDIA

If it still BSOD's after that, then try the STOP 0x116 troubleshooter listed above.

If the above steps don't stop the BSOD's, please zip up and upload any new memory dumps with your next post - and we'll see what we can figure out from there.

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs

What wireless USB device do you see here? I had a wireless PCI card, but I don't think I've installed drivers for it since I installed Windows 8. I also don't see it in my device manager. It's possible (and, in fact, quite probable) that I managed to copy a dll from it over to my current setup at some point, but I don't know which that would be.

[DEL]I have this power supply: Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Silent Pro Gold Series RS800-80GAD3-US 800W ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.92 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
Specifically, cooler master silent pro gold series RS800-80GAD3-US 800W.[/DEL]

EDIT: Woops. Looked at a hardware list for a different computer. I have this: Newegg.com - CORSAIR Professional Series HX750 (CMPSU-750HX) 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

I actually just installed the latest driver version (302.80) sometime between the recent BSODs. I also had exactly this issue when I had Windows 7, so it is not solely an issue on 8. I haven't installed the release preview because I was unaware it was publicly released.

I ran the small test set on the video memory stress test you linked in the sevenforums thread. It found 0 errors. I'm testing with the full now. I suspect this will take a while.

I may have made a mistake in my lookup. But the network adapter list didn't have a PnP ID for the wireless device.
It was a RangeMax Next Wireless-N Notebook Adapter - and a more detailed search shows it's most likely a PCI card.
My mistake! Thanks for catching it (and my cautions don't apply to it).

An 80+ 750 watt PSU is probably plenty. You may want to disconnect as many devices as you can to see if that decreases the frequency of the BSOD's. If it does, you may have an issue with the PSU.

As there were lot's of video issues with the Consumer Preview - and not nearly as many with the Release Preview - I'd suggest installing that. It's available here: Download Windows 8 Release Preview

BUT...As you had these issues with Win7 also - I'd have to wonder about the video card.
The definitive test is to try another video card. If you don't have a spare, try purchasing one from a store that will allow you to return it if it's not needed.
