not sure about the phone but I know from my own internet speed test results ,I get nothing like this when downloading from any site ,likely because of where the data is coming from .

The mostly like reason for your speed drops is that the results of these tests merely measure the fastest up/down speeds that your connection is capable of, what you get in real-world situations will usually be lower than what the tests say, because various factors come into play.

Also....a lot of ISPs (mine included) give priority to packets being sent and received by these speedtest servers...

So they can point at the results and say 'look how fast our connections are'.

now , if only I could route all my browsing and downloading through them...... :geek:

On Speedtest, try other points in the world, not just the speed to your ISP, you'll see widely different results. When downloading, the speed is also proportional to ISP's speed and bandwidth to the rest of internet. Load on ISP's server and various points on the net to FTP where you are downloading stuff from can also vary so you can never be sure how fast downloading will be. At default, Speedtest will show you just network speed between you and your ISP. For real world monitoring you can use something like "DU Meter".

@ CountMike: Thanks for the DU Meter mention, looks good. I'm also currently using an app called NetLimiter to limit up/down speeds per app, mainly for the ones that don't have internal limiters of their own.

I'm sure you have a good reason for using outdated wireless G ?

This certainly isn't helping your situation and you may see some improvement going to Wireless N. :)

Your Intel 2230N adaptor is capable of using N but you need to set the router up to use the 802.11N only setting in order to achieve true wireless N speeds.

Afraid it's up to your ISP. May I ask what's the speed (down/upload ) you are paying for ? Looks like 8/1 Mn/s.

802.11 G can go up to 100 Mb/s I don't think he's paying for that much and getting less than 8.

How about allowing others to help rather than admonishing their useful comments. ;)

The connection certainly won't be any worse using wireless N and the LAN speeds may increase x6. Wireless G is over ten years out of date, it's very unlikely than any Windows 8 drivers have been optimized to use an outdated wireless standard. I won't get into the potential problems associated with using outdated security and encryption. I won't be going back and forth with you on this bro so have a nice day. You are not only unhelpful to the Op but your comment is completely incorrect for a variety of reasons as already stated.
