Do you plan to use third-party antivirus and firewall?

Using Bitdefender, was using Kaspersky. I like Bitdefend better. Kaspersky always complained about not being updated even though it was set to auto update. Bitdefender updates itself without complaining. I think either works well, but Bitdefender works better.

I just worked on two computers that had free antivirus protection. They both had viruses. They were running AVG Free. AVG found and quaranted the viruses durring a full scan, but the viruses got in no problem and were happily infecting until the full scan was run.

Kaspersky & Bitdefender have stopped viruses from getting in, on the computers I have run them on, but are always virus free durring full scans. I guess at least for me, that is the difference between free & paid.

I an using the Microsoft protection. I avoid shady sites, and haven't seen a virus or other malware in years... I have my router's firewall as additional protection from the outside.

I have no doubt that a determined hacker could get into my system, but frankly, I am not going to expend the effort to make my system as impervious as possible. I do use fairly strong passwords on all of my components, and web sites I log in to, along with avoiding the shady sites I mentioned before. Also, I don't really keep very much of financial interest on my system, so frankly, even if I am hacked, it will lead mostly to a frustrated hacker.

I have considered using other software, and Bit Defender would probably be my choice if I thought I needed more...

I think that extra security software for people like me is like being in a long term monogamous relationship, and wearing two condoms just in case.

Well, considering that Windows 8, out of the box, blocks 85% of malware, there is not a lot of need to have a separate anti-virus or firewall.

But I am not most people.

Been using Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 for a few months now, so far so good! I'm real pleased with its performance. It has basically little impact on boot time, although it seems to start up AFTER Windows is booted.

Absolutely not -- why bother since the new way Ms incorporates W8 security is actually in the KERNEL code and not via an API -- and MS aren't going to release Windows kernel Source code to 3rd party developers.

For HOME developers forget everything you ever read about Windows security on previous releases on Windows. On W8 the basic security (MSE enhanced from W7 and renamed back to Windows defender) is far far better and 100% better than any of the (Usually IMO rubbish) 3rd party security products out there designed for HOME computers.

Corporate computers are a different ballgame but my post is directed to HOME users.

For Home computers it's GAME OVER for kapersky, Symantec, Norton, anti-malwarebytes etc etc.

Don't bother responding to this post by saying XXX review regards YYY as the best -- since these reviews are always AT LEAST one month (often more) out of date and everybody knows that a new virus can appear AT ANY TIME.

And as usual NEVER EVER EVER believe anything put out by that 100% rubbish organisation known as Gartner -- why people even READ their B/S is beyond me as all their predictions are about on par with RANDOM GUESSING and sometimes worse.

The best defence of course is still YOURSELF.

(Just as an afterthought -- Ms WANTS W8 to succeed -- so if any viruses are reported back to MS they will patch / fix them immediately -- they have the source code of course. Other vendors will by necessity take longer as they will have to "Reverse Engineer" the MS patches --there's no decent API now for adding virus detection for 3rd party developers).

Thank you jimbo! Very informative to say the least. Chalk another one up for MS with 8. I'll assume by 9 or so we'll all be buying Defender, which is alright by me. If I owned an OS that everyone has been sponging off of all these years, I'd be selling AV too. It's about time MS woke up.

BTW, Security Essentials (and now Defender) is all I've used since released. Never had a problem. My last girlfriend hired my son-in-law to replace an HD in a lappy because her daughter dropped it. (It was ok by me, for if things didn't work out I wouldn't be placed in the dog house <- a little more experienced)

Anywho, he replaced the HD, loaded Windows, and a 3rd party AV. When she got it back, the kid complained how slow is was running. I conveniently uninstalled the AV and downloaded Security Essentials. I got a "That's better" and a few brownie points.

Sure enough, she had to call him back because it wouldn't stay connected to her router. He then saw SE loaded. "Why did you load that?!" Because it's written for the OS, works in the background, and uses far less resources than the sloppy-written one you loaded. "Yeah, but that one updates faster. Why don't you let the professional handle this?!" Well, let me tell you that my daughter would be burying her husband went through my mind! I looked at him and asked for his "professional certificate".....He shut up.

I personally think Windows Defender + Windows firewall is enough and there is no need for third-party apps which most of the times slow down windows systems.

That's correct for Windows 8 (MSE remains MSE on Windows 7 and prior). An update came in via Windows Update during I think was the Consumer Preview or late Developer Preview (if I remember correctly) that hardblocked MSE from being installed as Windows Defender (MSE rebranded) was being hardcoded into the OS itself.

Personally I see no need to use 3rd party anything. I've always avoided it as much as possible. Most are just plain crap, although some are good. I believe it creates bugs and problems that isn't worth the effort. I have collected a few through trial and error over the years, though. I trust them and their creators. One is a registry cleaner and another a history cleaner.

In this case, Windows Defender and the Firewall are written efficiently and do not use too much resource, for they run in the background. I've looked at some machines that ran 3rd party antivirus that bogs them down incredibly. Like an inch worm up a branch! I recomended the owners to download M$ Security Essentials which helped quite a bit. Of course this depends on how much mem one has.

Also, I've heard that Windows Defender isn't as quick at updating definitions verses others, but I'll take the chances on a day or so.

Of course professional programs that one may need and install are a completely different story. They are written efficiently for they would not be in business for long.

Sorry had to laugh when you said "Registry Cleaner" that is why you should stay well away from registry cleaners, if your going to mess with the registry, do it manually, or leave it be.

CCleaner (free version) is well-proven good maintenance software for temp files and registry cleaner. I know some members here recommend it greatly. Brink (admin) has a thread on it and posts when updates are available.
