I voted for Windows 8 firewall and AV and now I find this Microsoft Fails AV-Test Certification , is this legit or is this BS ?

I would take it lightly or not take it at all. That German AV testing company I've never even heard of until lately, and most of what I've seen about them is less than respectable.

To put it in other words, they are trash.

Not to mention that is for Windows 7 and prior, Windows 8 has a more enhanced version of MSE built right into the OS along with the new kernel which a lot of Windows hackers are calling "hard" to break.

Agree!

New kernel. More security in that Defender is working in that level. More UAC layers, also. I'm not all that savvy. I listen to the Pros on the forum.

I think one needs to consider which site is posting the article. I also read the comments after the articles. I believe if one takes the "consciousness of the whole" there, one gets the truth of the article. It seems to me that one was false.

And lol! There was an advertisement for a AV following the article. That surely says something as well.

Yikes! No mincing words with you. Anyway I'm not a big fan of any AV or security programs. They hurt system performance, they're expensive, and in my past experience they've caused me more grief than the malware they were supposed to be protecting me from. And to top it off the one time I actually got malware on my computer (which I foolishly let in) I was watching the virus run and not only could the AV not stop it or remove it, it couldn't even detect it! So I figure all in all I'll stick with Defender & MS firewall, I figure MS should know how to defend their stuff better than any third party, at least they should be better motivated.

I test AV at a large Fortune 10 company and we use Symantec Endpoint Protection at work and almost all of us use Microsoft Security Essentials on Win7 and the built-in Windows Defender on Windows 8. I also use MalWareBytes at home. I cannot recommend any other products based upon our testing, that's really all I can say... Hope this helps!

I was going to go third party AV, but all the free ones I've tried so far seem to cause a LBSOD. So, Win8 AV and firewall for me.

I used to install and use third-party AV and Firewall programs, but since Windows 8 I didn't see the need to do so. Windows Defender and Firewall do what they're supposed to. I mean, it's so much less hassle to find the "best" program when you already have something that is built-in with the OS, updates constantly and works in the background without having me to look at it (unless something happens). I used different third-party programs and was bombarded by their ads to pay and upgrade to "Internet Security". With Defender I Don't have to deal with that, the interface is nice and clean.

There's no real need for one I think, I mean, if you know what you're doing and not downloading every single file offered online then you'll be fine. I can't remember the last time I had a computer infection. Still doesn't hurt to have a free one just in case something silly happens.

He who would tempt fate often runs into disaster. *Confucius*

Hi Mike, another Confucius says.
By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and Third, by experience, which is the bitterest.

I took the third.. :p
And it's been years. ;)
