Solved Disk Cleanup hangs trying to do 'Windows Update Cleanup'.

where said 9mb is located would be of some help too id imagine :p in case its related to the files themselves and permissions or something.

Thought it might have to do w/ the fact I have time synch disabled, indexing disabled, uac disabled.. but none of that helped either. (just to add to the process of elimination)

I tried Disk Cleanup again today. WUC showed 59 MB. Told it to do the cleanup. Ran DC again. Showed 9 MB. Ran DC again. Showed 9 MB. It seems to be unable to clear those last 9 MB on either of my computers (both running Win. 8.1). I'm just living with this problem. I'm unaware of any other ramifications of it but would be glad to see it fixed.

Just found this thread in passing. I thought I was crazy and was the only one with this problem.

WUC show's 9MB since the last update Tues. Disk clean up usually works its magic, but not this time. CCleaner, I ran it tonight, then disk clean up again and the miserable 9MB is still there.

I have no idea on how to be rid of it.

Still have this problem. I did the Win updates today, ran disk cleanup. It did remove all of the new update leftovers, but the 9MB from last month is still there.
Now this time it won't remove the 7.26MB from Defender.
I did a restart also and it made no difference. Also tried this: Disk Cleanup : Extended - Windows 7 Help Forums
and it did not help either.

Anyone else still have this going on, or am I the only one ?

Pretty much same happens to me with as little as 4mb or so is left keeps coming back, even after doing same deleting the SoftwareDistribution/Download folder items and Windows temp.

I have a feeling i may not be right, but it may have to do with Tiles (apps) updates or history in Start menu. I know you can use Task manager under Apps history to clear it, but when i ran Disk Cleanup and then selected Clean up System files after that runs and i start to delete them i had Task Manager opened to Apps history tab and noticed items jumping , moving around was not doing before i started deleting in Disk Cleanup.

Not saying for sure i am right about this a possibility, but i also believe the app updates are also stored in C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/download

True since Windows 8.1 Disk Cleanup seems much slower regardless of how much it's cleaning, in general it's slower.

CCleaner as far as i know does not clean up Windows updates unless it possibly works under settings to Include Custom files to delete and folders to empty. Which i found never worked for me even with other software, not familiar with Enhanced, Extended CCleaner though.

Yes i pretty much knows this, what else i said though might be a possibility. We also know takes 7 days for disk cleanup before might clean it up, wonder how true that is but said in tutorials here.

Well I don't know about 7 days to work. It has been a month now since the 9MB has not been removed.
For me it has always worked on the same day, until now.

Well my thoughts on App updates and history was just a speculation, possibility. I get same thing as you left with about 4MB at times.
8.1 still always updating, maybe possible bug. I mean not a great amount, but i can understand it can be bothersome not knowing why.

Where i read about 7 days, from Brink's reply here http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/16853-win-8-disk-cleanup.html

Thanks for the link. Interesting reading. Post # 18, suggests to try deleting each item by itself.
Good in theory, but of-course it didn't work.
I guess you are right and it is some kind of bug, maybe, just maybe, MS will get around to fixing it.

Maybe similar 7 day rule, who knows, as long not left with say you do a 100- 200MB Windows Update and that does not get cleaned, then i would be more concerned. 4-9mb not a lot, even though i said can be bothersome why it should leave it still.

Ask some of the Microsoft Professionals here, like Brink.

It just baffles me why this is happening to many people and there is no solution at all. It happened to me as well with a stubborn 47 mb of windows update cleanup that refuses to be removed no matter what i did. And to blame CCleaner for this mess is just nonsense because it is a well known utility program that keeps your system healthy which is actually what Microsoft encourage us to do!!!!
