How to Show or Hide Details Pane in File Explorer in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
The details pane can be used to see the most common properties associated with the selected file. File properties provide more detailed info about a file, such as the author, the date you last changed the file, and any descriptive tags you might have added to the file.

This tutorial will show you how to show or hide the details pane in File Explorer for your user account in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

Note   Note

  • Setting the details pane to hide or show in File Explorer is a universal setting applied to all folders, and not just specific folders.

  • The details pane only shows the total size of up to 15 selected items by default. Viewing the total size of more than 15 selected items requires clicking/tapping on the Show more details link in the details pane first.

  • You can drag the left border of the details pane left and right to increase or decrease it's width in File Explorer.

  • If you set the details pane to show, then it will replace the preview pane if it is currently showing.

  • If you set the preview pane to show, then it will replace the details pane if it is currently showing.

the detail pane for win7 is below and shows icon on bottom left and in windows 8, the current detail pane use to be preview pane in 7. is there a way to get that bottom pane back in windows 8? or better yet, is there a way for detail pane in windows 8 to show up only for certain type of folders, or specific selected folders?

Hello Andrews, and welcome to Eight Forums. :)

It sounds like you may not have pressed all 3 Alt+Shift+P keys together fast enough.

I like pressing and holding Alt, then press Shift+P and release keys.

I tried as fast as I can but it acts like ALT then P (slow) for some reason. I tried it on 2 PC's. Do you think it is like that because my system language? When I hover mouse over "show detail panel" icon it shows alt + shift + P tho...

Usually you see what's in your screenshot if you pressed Alt+F instead.

I guess it is ALT + File in english windows. In my system it is ALT + Plik and it seems like this shortcut interferes with ALT + SHIFT + P

I think it is Microsoft fault...

Yep, it seems like some sort of language difference causing it.

You might try using the first letter for whatever "Preview" and "Pane" translates to for that language to see if either may work.
