Desktop disappeared after explorer.exe error

Good morning,

Today when I turned on my laptop the screen was black, not showing a thing. With no options to solve this I rebooted the laptop by pressing the power button for a few seconds.

When I restarted the laptop it started and shown the username/password screen. I input my password and then a pop up window appeared with an error related to explorer.exe

I cannot see the apps screen or the desktop. The desktop is just a black screen with a grey bar. I can access windows explorer by clicking "windows key + E" but I cannot do anything else.

Now everytime I start my laptop, the error does not come up, I input my password and I don´t see apps screen or desktop. Has anyone came across this issue before?

Thanks in advance.

Press ctrl + shift + esc

Task manager will open, then go to file> new task

type in explorer.exe and press enter explorer should start again. If it keeps happening, perform a system restore

(just press the windows key and restore to a point that you remember it didnt happen)

Hi guys,

If I try to open any file, using the command line, an error comes up:

"The program can't start because WININET.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".

This could be the cause of my issues. But how to fiz it?

Hi medab1, yes I can open the cmd.exe running as an admin. What should I do then? Thank you.

Try to run sfc /scannow.

When & if it gets done try running:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then reboot.
DISM takes up to an hour to finish.

Maybe also check for errors in C: Properties:

After the sfc /scannow reached 100% an error message poped up saying: "The program can't start because WININET.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem" at the top of the error message popup window it said "sfc.exe". Then the cmd line said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I am going to try to run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and let you know

If you have Control Panel visible in Explorer, open All control panel items & click on Recovery.

Untitled.png

If that works, you might want to refresh your computer.
Or return it to original factory settings. :(

Unless Someone has a better idea.
Feel free to jump in & offer advice.

EDIT-

If you have the Recycle Bin on the Desktop, open Explorer & click on Desktop.

Right click Recycle Bin & choose Open.
Look to see if the DLL is there.
If so, restore it. :)

Is there a way to extract and expand the systems files from an install disk? Like you could with Windows XP install disks? They've got the stuff compressed on the 7 and 8 install disks.
