I have a refurbished tablet bought on Ebay.
I have successfully installed all the windows updates and am trying to flash the latest Dell bios update.
Get asked for an Admin Password when flashing, so evidently something is locked.
Dell has been little help, other than transferring registration to me.
Any suggestions?

Reboot and Hit F2 to get into BIOS if asks for a password the BIOS is admin password locked..
Click to unlock without inputting any password..
A screen will popup showing you a code (usually the Service Tag - Code)
See if That code ends with 595B, D35B or 2A7B....

that appears to be just the service tag

6S4YQT1-2A7B password: QONepm1I253e1vOi

IF That code ends with 595B, D35B or 2A7B....
Enter the Admin Password to Unlock the Dell Bios Settings..
Then go into security settings and clear the user set passwords...
Failure to clear the User set passwords will result in the Bios be Locked upon reboot (with same unknown user password)

Tried the codes you sent:
6S4YQT1-595B password: zqhvo9cb
6S4YQT1-D35B password: fzud6k15
6S4YQT1-2A7B password: QONepm1I253e1vOi

But invalid. Am I screwing up somewhere? I only have a 7 digit service code.

No, you may just have a Bios, that I can not get into via backdoor..

6S4YQT1-595B = zqhvo9cb
6S4YQT1-D35B = fzud6k15
6S4YQT1-2A7B = QONepm1I253e1vOi
6S4YQT1-1D3B = V1Q1bJ2vWVEJVsV1
6S4YQT1-1F66 = k2diHVoDpF7eJyu1
6S4YQT1-6FF1 = QBfDV1ZbftnrZN5t

Note: codes are case sensitive

when you get to enter the password - hit enter without any input, maybe hit enter twice...
they use to display a 10 digit code

If this was a desktop board there would be a pswd jumper to clear the password..
Another trick, used for laptops was to short out two pins on the onboard password chip,
so the bios would not read from the EEPROM chip upon power-on

If I hit Enter without input, I get no code, only the same invalid error.

As so many of these things are being sold as refurbished with locked codes, maybe a "back door" will emerge. It is a great toy for the $75 price.

I really appreciate all your efforts.

Dell, when I worked the Dell forums, would only give the password for the BIOS to the registered with Dell owner. I don't know if that still applies. Their reasoning was because of the large number of laptops that were stolen.

However, unless a BIOS update fixes a problem you are having or adds support for hardware you want to install, there is no need to install any BIOS update. Keep in mind, on a Dell, if the BIOS update failed and corrupted the BIOS, the ONLY option is the replace the motherboard. There is no BIOS recovery.

Thanks

I was able to install all Windows updates except one, which crashes the thing.
I'm unable to install the newer Bios and a chipset driver from Dell. (Must depend upon the Bios update).

Since the tablet runs well as is, I'll just forgo any Bios updates.

Thanks again, Guys.
