Delayed wireless connection

Hi everyone - my first post on this forum

I have a Packard Bell Laptop- (Win 8.1) that has had very little use. This has never given any bother whatsoever. No changes to hardware/software have been made, and the laptop has been bulletproof!

In the last week a problem has developed, in that when booting up, the internet icon is showing NO connection. Click on the icon and as expected there is a list of 'available' connections. However it also shows the wi-fi has not started, and it is greyed out, therefore cannot be dragged to 'on'.
Just going away from the machine for approx 5-10 minutes, and surprise, it is fully up and running once again.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Do a system restore before any updates were applied when you booted it up.

The other is to turn off the ability for Windows to update any drivers and uninstall the driver for the network device and then reboot and let Windows install the one it has stored.

The other would be if you have any kind of Internet security software. Make sure that it has not changed the connection to Public from Private.

Thank you broe23 for your response.
I've done all the usual - but take your point about a possible change from Private to public. Machine belongs to next door neighbour - so await the opportunity of investigating this possibility.
Thanks again

Take the neighbor their favorite beverage or show up and tell them to grab it and go to the pub to have a couple of Pints and some dinner.

While talking, you can walk them through what to look for.
