Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8

How to Restore Default File Extension Type Associations in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
This tutorial will allow you to restore the default registry entries and program associations for the file extension type and protocol of your choice in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.

warning   Warning
These default file associations should only be used in Windows 8 and 8.1.

Note   Note
The list of available default file extension and protocol associations below is just a start for now, and is a work in progress.

I'll constantly be adding more to the list, but if one you need is not listed yet below, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to get it added to the list.

Here's How:

1. Click/tap on the link of the file extension type or protocol in the table below that you would like to restore the default associations of to download it's .reg file.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to Merge it.

4. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

Tip   Tip

  • If you are signed in as a standard user account, then you will also get a Cannot import type error. Just click/tap OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default associations of the file extension if the standard user used Open with to select the wrong program to open the file with.

  • If the .reg file is not able to Merge, then double check in Default Programs to make sure that the .reg file extension has it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the .reg file again.

5. Sign out and in, or restart the computer to apply.

6. If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg file for the listed file extension or protocol below while logged into their administrator account.

7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Default Windows 8 and 8.1 File Associations:

Note   Note
To download all available default file extensions in the table below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) to your desktop any .reg file for file extensions you want to use. You can now pick up at step 3 above.

THANKS

:D Very nice thank so much,I recently got Windows 8, 64-bit on new machine and I suppose I should have done my homework a lil better. I just assumed it was Windows 7 but fixed or on steroids, as is usual for new OS.I don't want a touch screen so I have had to find ways to make system do like I want, this is a great help cuz anytime I open something in notepad or other it changes the file association  of course at some point it will be much easier and I suppose learning new stuff is a good thing but it can try my patience. So its very cool to have a site like this so thanks again.:D I'm not sure if I ask here but I was trying to find the correct file association for "DAT" files, thanks.

Hello MIKLO, and welcome to Eight Forums. :)

DAT had been added to the list.

When you use "Open with -> Choose default program", be sure to have the "Use this app for all XXX files" unchecked to only open the file with the app for just this time.

Hi Brink...I'm new here - great site and posts, this one included. I know it'll help people...a year or two ago, I was fiddling around with defaults (or some overanxious Reg Cleaner was) and I lost a bunch of Start Menu/taskbar/desktop icons. Web searches suggested rebuilding icon cache, system file checker, etc., but finally I figured out that .LNK files were the only files affected. Another search found a post like this one somewhere....imported .LNK reg file and saved my bacon then; this post will no doubt help folks as well.

Great site!

Hi Brink,
I've just discovered that most video file types in Win8 seem to be subject to the "cross pollination" that I encountered with ISO/AVI/MKV.
I would be grateful if you could add IMG WMV MP4 FLV and 3GP to the restore set.

Thanks in advance.

Very nice and really useful, I have this for Vista and older versions and is really helpful, although it is strange that there are places that I see in my version of Windows 8 X64 that it says Windows7, I would think it should, and could have been changed...... go figure! I really like this site, so thanks to the people that did all the hard work to make it cool and easy to use and full of great info.:thumb:

Thank you MIKLO.

Yeah, the "Windows 7 File Recovery" in the Control Panel is the carried over Windows Backup and System Image features from Windows 7. In Windows 8, the new file backup feature is "File History". To me "File History" is just an improved "Previous Versions" feature from Windows 7.

Hello Jim,

All added to the tutorial, except FLV. FLV is not a default file type in Windows 8, but you can use the .reg file below to unassociate it. :)

You're most welcome Hairy. If you need any that are not on the list, then please just let me know. :)

Hi Brink,
I've just discovered that most video file types in Win8 seem to be subject to the "cross pollination" that I encountered with ISO/AVI/MKV.
I would be grateful if you could add IMG WMV MP4 FLV and 3GP to the restore set.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jim,

All added to the tutorial, except FLV. FLV is not a default file type in Windows 8, but you can use the .reg file below to unassociate it. :)

Thank you Shawn. :)

Due to an attack of CRAFT I missed out MKV.
Would you mind adding that to the set?

Thanks

:)

Hi Brink,

I would like to know how can I restore my Windows 8 default icons? I installed a program that changed my icons,
but when uninstalled the icons didn't changed back to default.

I don't have a restore point because frequently run an optimizer software that deletes it.
I have tried to rebuild the icon cache using the steps at this forum but no luck.

Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Support Forums

on the last step though, it says I could try to download and merge the ICO option in this tutorial to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files

but the tutorial points to a windows 7 default .ico file.
I was wondering whether you have the default .ico association files for windows 8 pro

or any advice that could help fix my problem.

Thanks

Hello vitalpart, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In addition, .ico has been added to the tutorial on the first page for download. :)
