Morning folks... first posting here.
wondered if anyone has any idea of what the forthcoming W8 preview download might be (I'm on a 10gb monthly limit). And do you think it will fit on one standard DVD when burned as an ISO ?

I tried the W8 developer preview a couple of months back which was interesting but of course it was far to limited to use for any length of time.

Hi there
I can't see any point in all these ISP's advertising new SOOPER DOOPER ultra fast broadband if your stuck with a 10 GB limit -- this is about equivalent to watching roughly 2 Movies (at the most) in full HD 1080p definition.

Other than that -- you can download as an ISO of whatever size and mount it with something like Daemon tools or Alcohol 52% to install from.

If you have to install from a physical DVD then you will probably need a D/L type DVD -- I suspect if the preview was anything to go by there will be serveral tools making a single DVD > 4.7GB.

MS could also do a double download such as 1 disc = the base product and disc nr 2 =the extra / advanced features / development kit / tools etc.

For those constrained by these absurdly small monthly downloads in todays environment of smart phones, tablets etc etc and who can't change ISP's -- you could try and find a LEGAL torrent and download in bits and pieces such as various different wi-fi spots etc.

Torrents could actually be a REALLY SMART way of getting LEGAL software downloaded by zillions of people at the same time WITHOUT overloading the servers.

Driver packs distribute their stuff this way as does Opensuse (you get a choice whether to download via torrent or as a complete iso).

(Please note here I'm not referring to those "Other Torrents" -- but simply stating that this could be a really sensible way of ensuring proper distributed downloads without overloading the distribution servers who could be doing the original "seeding" ).

Cheers
jimbo

I agree 10gb is small by todays standards although I get good consistent speeds (17Mb down and 1Mb up). Around 4 to 6gb and sometimes less a month easily covers my needs. Lol, 5 years ago a 2Gb monthly limit covered it... how web pages have grown.

I hope that they will have some fast servers like the ones they put in for the Win7 Beta - after they had a few days of disaster.

I just hope that MS will put 32 and 64-bit versions on the same installation ISO image for the incoming CP.
I live in a country with the most problematic bandwidth limitation which took me 8 hours to download 4.8 GB Developer preview.
But it's worth it. :)

If there were both 32 & 64bit versions in the ISO it would take twice as long to download.
They are two completely different OS, and would have to have both complete versions included.

Better for us with slow internet connections to D/L them separately.

If you are running that tight of a monthly cap, maybe you can find someone local that can mail you a disk:)

I hope so too :) Not sure if my CD/DVD drive supports dual layer discs. I would think MS would want to keep it on one disc for retail/OEM versions too.

A friend a few doors away has the same ISP package as myself but they only use I guess 1 GB a monthif that.

Actually I looked up the penalty for going over 10Gb and the first time it is just an email warning, and if it happens again any time after that then the charge is £5 per 5Gb over.

If you install in e.g. Virtual Box, then you do not need to burn a DVD. And it is so much more comfortable running Win7 and Win8 in parallel.

That depends on the stick

It will install faster if you put it on a USB flash drive.
I installed Ubuntu on a USB stick.
I thought that it would be better than the Live CD version.

Boy was I wrong!
The Live CD is slow, but the USB is unusable.
