High DPI issues

Do not try to use a value above 150% if you don't (exactly) know what you're doing. Those values only work nice on large resolution monitors HD - UHD sizes. 300% - 500% can render your UI on screen unusable/unreadable and things will need to be reset.

Alright then!

It can take roughly from a few days to a week or two, even more, depending how much time I can work on it.

But good to see we have similar taste for colors. ;)

Aero8-Yellow

The first version I've managed to finish is the XL one. We needed a base theme for the yellow pointers so this is it. :D

@Sturgess
I hope you still use the super-sized versions, then here it is:

aero8-yellow-xl-prev.png

The standard pointers are included. Note that I always add precision-select-cross, text-cursor and unavailable-cursor to the pack (also better for a consistent scheme install).

Other pointers like my W8 dotted spinner from the previous posts are still on the drawing table (or should I say re-colouring table).
Sorry for the delay.

XL version of Aero8-Yellow
How to use:
Download and extract the attached zip.
Right click on the install.inf to install.

Next time we'll try to focus on the L en medium-sized versions and the dotted-spinner(s) too. :)

UPDATE:
The scheme name was renamed adding extra-large in the name, otherwise it would mean this is the normal-sized cursor scheme: modified install.inf file.
This should fix the naming if the normal edition of this cursor gets installed.

Install.inf (right-click-install) is installing the cursor scheme with the name "Aero8-Yellow (extra-large)".

Cheers!
Hopachi

Win8Spinner Yellow (XL)

...
the dotted-spinner in a XL Yellow.
...

Here it is: the dotted-spinner XL-sized pointer. :)

Requires: Aero8-Yellow (XL) released in a previous post.

Info about the previews below:
The previews are created from the same (XL) cursor files. All depends on your DPI settings.
For 100% DPI (default) you see the 32x32px on screen and for 200% you see the 64x64px. Of course the 48x48px layer exists as well at 150% but just wasn't added as a preview below.

preview 32x32px:

working-y-xl.gif busy-y-all.gif

preview 64x64px:

64yw.gif 64yb.gif

The busy spinner is called 'all' instead of 'xl' since it can be used for any other scheme (L or normal). I didn't wanted to create smaller version because those balls get too small and quality decreases considerably.

Usage:
-get the attached zip and extract it: it includes the two ANI files
-place the two ANI files in the system cursor folder, where the other cursors are located
-go to mouse properties -> pointers tab
-select 'busy' and 'working' states and browse to where the cursors are placed to select desired file

That's it for XL yellow.

Cheers!
Hopachi

I have a request.....I would appreciate it if someone could make me a black and red themed cursor set. The higher the quality the better. If you could modify some of the stock cursors so they have a sharper look. That would be great, And a red glow would kick @55. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums!

Yep, I don't think we have that in high quality yet. :D

I've tried some black and red cursors myself in the past.
The visibility isn't very good on most backgrounds and I found them less sharp than other color combinations, especially if you use light backgrounds.

For the moment the focus lies on visibility. My hands are full with the red and yellow versions at the moment.

If there are still others around making cursors that would be great. :)

Here are some useful links that you can try, with other black and red pointers:

do you think the red with a white outer would be possible? and if so, a possible black glow on the outside of the white?

A white outer works well with red inner because it will be a dark pointer (see others with dark aero...) + it resembles the yellow outer I made previously.

Black glow? That might work. I did some glow in the past.

Here's a rough preview:
rough-prev.png
Default pointer -> color invert -> red channel up -> add black shadow 0 offset....

But doing that to all layers and all needed pointers requires a lot of work. Assembly and saving in cursor format takes much of the time.
Each pointer of the Windows 8 cursor scheme has 3 layers so everything needs to be done 3 times if you want the same quality.

Cheers!

Yeah no problem, you might tweak that up a bit until you get what you need... I use gimp as image editor.

Using XXL sample of pointer below,

64px:

resized 32px:
prev2s.png
(an original in 32px would be much sharper)

In attachment zip you have the preview source in xcf format (can be opened in GIMP) remove or add shadows, change colors...

Good question. :)
Sure thing I'll provide some info, especially for those interested.

I can name 3 good programs, one can do but using a combination is better, for different tasks.

Free:
-You can use real World Cursor Editor, this one is a must but is also the most advanced one, since it is the one that supports multi-layered animated cursors (ANI-format).
-To quickly disassemble cursors, get frames, convert to images and animated previews (like GIFs) use AniTuner.

Shareware / 30 day full-working demo:
-Use built-in tools, easy interface one click animated cursor creation from filmstrip image, use Axialis CursorWorkshop.

Lately I need to create the multi-layered ANIs with the first program (RW) but I tend to combine them depending on the work.

Difficulty depends, what you need here is an image editor that can create the colorizing and the glow.
Modifying existing pointers is easier than starting from scratch of course. Usually you open the cursor file with the cursor editor, export to PNG and then use an image editor like GIMP or Photoshop to modify the color. Then import the new PNG in the cursor editor.

CursorWorkshop is easy to use for static cursors (CUR-format) in multi-layer as well.
Since I mentioned multi-layered: you basically need to do the same thing for each layer. Automatization might exist but I don't know of any except batch operations on images in GIMP and Photoshop where all the coloring can be done very fast but cursors take more time.

That's all.
Feel free to give it a shot anytime. :)

Win8Spinner Yellow (XL) update:

The scheme name was renamed adding extra-large in the name, otherwise it would mean this is the normal-sized cursor scheme: modified install.inf file.
This should fix the naming if the normal edition of this cursor gets installed

See previous post above, link, just in case.
