Solved Crash when installing theme under windows 8

Install of any theme under windows 8 dual booting with windows 7 crashes the computer causing restart.

There hasn't been any bsods so there are no crash dumps included. This is verified in the msinfo32 file which was included. There are no mentions of event 41, power (which happens along with bsods.)

I suppose it is possible that the power to your machine was momentarily disrupted at the time you felt it crashed, but it did not.

Are you seeing the new Windows 8 bsod screen with the face? All I can go by is what I'm given.
There were no bsods logs nor power 41 events, as I said.

You could check for the presence of a C:\Windows\Minidump folder and/or C:\MEMORY.DMP

It's also good to check that the machine is set to produce small memory dumps. It's easy to Google it.

If you moved your page file to another partition or HDD/SSD, that could potentially be a reason why there are no bsod logs. But in that case, there still would be a power 41 event...and I'm not seeing it.

It's probably a good idea to run these two commands, one at a time, from an elevated command prompt. I see small issues with the disk, that are quite common though:

chkdsk /r

sfc /scannow

What kind of theme are you trying to install, a standard or and unsigned theme?

In my post above, I meant C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

Without further info or .dmp files, the best generic advice I can give is as follows:

Description of Windows Kernel event ID 41 error in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first"

1. Overclocking: Disable overclocking and see whether the issue happens when the system is run at the correct speed.
2. Check the memory: Verify the memory by using a memory checker. Verify that each memory chip is the same speed and that it is configured correctly in the system.
3. Power Supply: Make sure that the power supply has enough wattage to appropriately handle the installed devices. If you added memory, installed a newer processor, installed additional drives, or added external devices, such devices may require more energy than the current power supply can provide consistently.
4. Overheating: Check whether the system is overheating by examining the internal temperature of the hardware.
5. Defaults: Use system defaults, and run the system.

...and update all of your drivers from the manufacturers' websites. If 3rd party firewall/antivirus are present, uninstall in safe mode with the corresponding removal tool(s).

Speccy reported low (10.7v) power which was more that 5% off the 12v spec. Replaced power supply.... no more problem!

Same for me, vrosa. Good job dcmackie with figuring out about the low 12v power.

Yeah, this is the reason why people with nice or expensive machines clean out the insides on a regular basis. My machine is not expensive but it is invaluable to me. The cleaner it is inside, the easier the fans work keeping the machine clean(er), and in turn that puts less stress on critical components such as capacitors.

I'm not implying that it was your fault in any way at all. A perfectly clean machine can fail just the same.
