I have downloaded and installed Win. 8 using Windows Upgrade Assistant and all went well (So far):D

Can I now write the download to a bootable thumb drive so that it is available as a hard copy? If this is possible, where will I find the downloaded file?

Windows has a tool for making bootable flash drives. Just turn the upgrade into an .ISO and install.

I don't know what type of file it is which is why I'm asking where it would have been downloaded to. I can't find it in either of my Downloads folders!

You should have an upgrade file on your desktop, click on that, it asks some questions and one of them is do you want to install later say yes, then another question do you want to create an ISO file just say yes, when it has created the ISO file, right click on it to burn it to a DVD.
Then boot from that to completely wipe your disk and reformat, make sure you have your key for when you start the installation. If you have a Windows Live account use that. Make sure you feel comfortable doing this and have anything you need backed up, this worked for me, I hope it works for you.

OK, I found the ESD folder and opened Setup but it did not offer me any options other than install.

Its no use using the setup file, that is for setting up Windows, try the setup assistant if you still have it, or any kind of Windows install on your desktop if there.

If not, try downloading the setup assistant and using it again, if it asks do you want to install now, say no, hopefully it will then give you an option to turn the files into an ISO file, good luck.

Do you have all those in ESD,

If yes, you can make a USB stick. As in this tutorial:

Yes, I have all those files and I have downloaded the Win 7 USB/DVD tool but I can't get it to open in Win 8 so I'm going to try this in Win 7

OK, I tried it in Win 7 and got nowhere. I was not able to find a .ISO file anywhere in that directory so I guess it's a bust:cry:

Just finished downloading, and the download wizard made me a USB boot disk, it uses up 2.63 Gb space.

That makes me wonder if I can use a compressed 2 Gb stick instead because I have a couple ancient 2 Gb sticks lying around, and that would save my 4 Gb stick.

Been already compressed I doubt it would get much smaller. You could try but be warned extra compression my cause a loss of file integrity. You could always just leave the .ISO on a DVD

Can't be asked buying DVDs, I don't use them and prefer flash storage.

I'll just leave it on my 4Gb SD card that isn't being used for anything else.

Hi canuck257,
Go to your email sent by the Store when you purchased the Windows, you'll find a link there and should be able to download the .iso file, hopefully. Let us know the outcome.Capture1.JPG

You can't run the upgrade assistant from within Windows 8 - that is the error msg it gives when you try.

I used the upgrade assistant to install Win8 in a different partition so I could dual boot. I was able, later, to run the upgrade assistant again (in Win7) to make an iso from the ESD folder. I like to have an iso file so I can burn a USB key later when I want to reinstall.

Not sure what to suggest if you've already done the 'in place' update - there's gotta be a way...

Hi Brum, how's the old country?

I'll give it a try, in the meantime I've ordered the DVD. I know, I know, I'm just idle:think:
