Is there any way to connect my Gmail account to the Mail Metro App without having to use my Live ID? I have absolutely no desire to tie all my stuff to a MS Live ID. Just want to be able to check my mail.

I have already installed Skype desktop to get around the Live ID crap for the metro version, and I will install Thunderbird if needed, but if I can find a way around it I will use the built in mail client.

Thanks

Hi geeve420,

I cannot respond to your first choice because I do not use the metro stuff; however, just in case you decide to use Thunderbird as an alternative, I can only give you a +1 for that choice because it is easy to setup, offers POP3 access, and looks nice to boot! I have mine set to auto-check for new mail when first opened. I'm sure you are already aware of these benefits but I just like Thunderbird so much, I couldn't resist a response to that end. Good luck with getting your first choice working.

Forgive me if you already know this.

Open mail app.
Open charms bar
click on settings
click on accounts
click add an account
select google connect? (maybe "Other")

I cant say this works if the mail app isnt initially setup with a outlook etc account as I do have an outlook account associated with the mail app

I went ahead and installed it anyway in the meantime. I am familiar with it because I use Linux daily and it is by far the best open source mail client out there :) It would be nice to have email count and such in the live tile, but not not nice enough to connect with my windows ID.....

Thanks! When I open it it requires a Live ID to even get going. I went through settings and tried to tell it not to require my ID on apps, but then all it wants is enterprise mail. Man MS screwed the pooch on that LOL

how about a throwaway ms account that is just dead? Does it specifically need an account used for win8? Create a outlook/hotmail account and filter literally everything to end in junk email which will empty in 10 days after filtering.

I hate that these guys say if you dont accept this, then you're screwed with that, google does it with youtube and G+. Ive always avoided G+ until recently, having to upload videos to use as steaming backgrounds. That and youtube allows 17GB HD videos, I had no option but to say OK G+ let me in. I cant use youtube or google webtools now without allowing G+ etc ...

Thanks again and great idea. I ended up doing something similar.... I set up a live ID then, chose sign into apps individually (not recommended) then went on my merry way. That way only that app is associated with the live ID and it left my local account alone.

Man, what a total load of crap to just set up an email.

I know people say Google is the same way, But they are not. I can set up any email on my phone and tablet without signing into Google services. The only thing that absolutely needs it is the play store.

Thanks everyone!

Geeve
