Computer speaks to you

I figured I would put this here since it is "software".

See this link:

Make your Computer Welcome You

I tried it on my computer & it works.
I changed "PC" to "computer".

It speaks after all the icons & stuff have loaded.

SAVE your present sound scheme in case it over-rides it.

This setup won't work well for me because I normally leave my laptop in sleep mode and only rarely start it from scratch. However, i was able to set up a task to make it happen after I unlock my computer instead.

First, save the script in an accessible place, like your local documents folder.
Open Task Scheduler and create a new task.
General Tab - give it a name; select "run only when user is logged in"; select "run with highest privileges".
Triggers Tab - Create a new trigger, "on workstation unlock"; specific user = you; select "enabled".
Actions Tab - Select "Start a program/script"; Browse to your script to select script to run.
Conditions Tab - Uncheck "start only on AC" if desired.
The remaining tabs can be left alone.

Save and close out task scheduler.

Now when you unlock your PC the script should speak. I have mine saying "Greetings Michael, I am ready to do your bidding".

Is there a way to make that happen after a user logs in ?

There is only one user on my computer.Me.

I log in automatically without having to type in my password.
After the icons load it speaks to me.

If there was more than one user, I suppose it would work on the account the vbs was added to the Start folder.
After another user logged on, I don't know.

Maybe once they logged on the vbs could be added to their Start folder.

You could test it that way.

If you look at the task trigger selection list there is one for "at user logon". Note that the PC is still logged in when it is in sleep, so this would not work when waking from sleep mode.

I tried the new task at log on.
It worked.
After I logged out, I logged in.(I should have thought of that before)

After logging back in it took about 9 seconds for it to speak.

For the location of the vbs I first used- ....\Startup\Welcome.vbs

When I logged back in an error message appeared saying the vbs couldn't be found.
I closed the error message & after a few seconds it spoke.

I edited the location to just- .......\Startup

After logging back in, no error message & it spoke.

You can change the voice - search for "text to speech settings". I made it the english lady, just to class things up a bit. If you make the voice speed slow she sounds drunk (so much for class). :)

pcRat & mikeytg,

Thanks gents....great stuff...:cool:;)

http://www.eightforums.com/sound-audio/23135-text-speech-engine-not-working.html

I was not even aware of this feature...my text to speech engine is working properly...I just copied/pasted the above link for 'Control Panel' settings, and now have 'Hazel----->female from UK'...IMHO much easier on the soul...as you make mention, when 'slowing down speech' it definitely sounds like she was sitting in a pub engaging in many libations...LOL

Make it useful

I added the date and time to make it useful.

Code:
Dim speaks, speech, mydate, mytime
mydate = FormatDateTime(Date,1)
mytime = FormatDateTime(Time,4)
speaks="Good day you hoser. Today is " + mydate +". " + "It is " + mytime
Set speech=CreateObject("sapi.spvoice")
speech.Speak speaks

I hacked this together using the original script and google what you want like "vbscript convert date to string". That and lots of tries got it working.

Why dont you just get voxcommando? This would be extremely easy to do and you would be able to further this by being able to speak back to the computer.

Is extremely simple software to use, and you can make it as simple or complex as you like.

For example, I have one command which simply says hello. (Easy)

However I also have another command which will interact with my home automation system and turn lights on/off, activates alarms and controls my AV system.
