information   Information
A CLSID is a globally unique identifier that identifies a COM class object. For more information about a CLSID key and the function of it's subkeys in the registry, then see CLSID Key (COM).

This is a list of GUIDs from the CLSID key in the registry that can be used to create shortcuts to open items with in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

If you know of a GUID that is not in the list, then please feel free to share and post it as a reply below. :)

Note   Note
You could use either command below to create a shortcut with the CLSID key (GUID) for what it opens. If the shortcut doesn't work with one command, then use the other one.

You would right click or press and hold on the desktop, click/tap on New and Shortcut, use a command below for the "location", then type in a name for the shortcut. If you like, you can Pin to Taskbar on desktop, Pin to Start screen, add to Quick Launch, assign a keyboard shortcut to it, or move this shortcut to where you like for easy use.

You just missed the comma and two colon punctuations. The target would be this below instead. :)

explorer /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\::{374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}

You're welcome.

IMO, the File Explorer name makes more sense now since you are actually browsing through your files on the local PC and other locations and devices instead of just Windows. I suppose Microsoft felt the same.

Some of these don't work. New install of 8.1 Spring Update Professional x64. I am attempting Administrative Tools, the 'System' dialog, Windows Update and a few others. They all open documents. Here is an example from Run: C:\Windows\explorer.exe /e,::{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8} . The shell::: option displays an error. Any ideas? T. I. A.

Hello Silekonn, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Entering the location below while creating a new shortcut for Windows Updates works for me in Windows 8.1 Update. Please test to see if it will work for the others as well.

shell:::{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

The shortcut works. It must be different from 'Run.' What I need is 'System.' Does it function?

edit: Nevermind, shortcuts work with the shell command. These do not function well with Run. Thanks for the assistance.

Hello Brink, I am trying to open Connection Settings (The network flyout, then Connection Settings). I have yet to find the GUID of it. From this page, I found that I could use {A3DD4F92-658A-410F-84FD-6FBBBEF2FFFE}, but that opens something else. If I cannot find the GUID of the not called Metro interface, I guess I'll use that. Though I would like to use pages. How should I use pages with GUIDs?
