Solved Cloning SSHD to SSD Windows 8

Hey guys,

I need someones insight on my current situation,

I have a newer dell laptop and I have purchased a 512gb crucial ssd to replace the current hdd, after looking around i figured it would be relatively easy to clone and upgrade my current hdd, what i did not anticipate was that my current hdd is one of those sshd hybrid drives where it is 1000gb with 8gb of flash storage. It seems to be causing problems cause i tried cloning the c: partition to my new hard drive and swapping the hdd and booting, upon startup i just get a blue screen saying checking media and then an error, but when i swap back to my old one it works normally. Has anyone here had to deal with this before? All i want to do is keep my files and os and get the new drive working and it is proving problematic, there's not a lot of information online pertaining to this problem and anyones input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JR

The flash storage portion of the SSHD is only 8gb with 1000gb of traditional mechanical memory. All my files add up to about 209gb in total so it should be able to fit on the ssd, or do i still have to go the backup image route instead of clone?

Just did this a few weeks back. I simply shrank the partition on the bigger SSHD to a size the SSD would accept. Did have to backup and remove some larger files to get it small enough.

EDIT: I used CloneZilla. I've used it in the past and had good luck with it, worked perfect this time also. The interface is maybe not for the novice though.

A good way to defrag the hdd befor shrinking so it will be small as possible is to temporally shut of pagefile and system restore so they getdeleted, then defrag or better yet make a system image and then reimage(not bit for bit though) and then you can get smaller partition that will fit even on a 120GB disk. I dhad to do this for my old laptop.

not concerned with size of the partition as i can shrink that, but is there something in the flash needed to boot properly? I'm trying to understand the error im getting after the clone and i try to boot from ssd

What did you use to clone? Should clone the main partition and the UEFI at least, the other recovery ones also if you want recovery.

I used macrium reflect to clone, i only cloned c partition although there were other partitions to pick from, how can i tell which is which?

can you send a snapshot of all partitions on your harddrive..

Windows is very particular about partition placement, it looks for certain things in a particular place if you have multiple partitions.
Your boot files may not be in your OS partition therefore you need to have them in their proper places.

For example:

Your OS may be in the first partition while your boot and recovery may be on the third or fourth partition.
In this case windows will look for the boot files on the 3rd or 4th partition, but if you only copied/cloned your OS partition, it wont boot.

That is a good pick-up- he may have to use BCDEdit.

Ok,

Here's a pic of what I am looking at in macrium,

hardrive.PNG

I've tried cloning a couple different partitions including just the c: drive which didn't work, and everything but the flash memory which also didnt work, and this last one which everything on the hard drive and it still isn't working.

The drive didn't come with any migration software? My Samsung did. I'd try CloneZilla since Macrium doesn't seem to be working for you, although the UI is more like lower command level prompts so you need to be sure of the partition labels it presents like ssda, ssda1, etc. Appears you are in legacy mode, don't know if that is having some kind of impact. I have no idea what a couple of those partitions are. :(

OK, maybe not legacy (MBR) just used to seeing an EFI partition.

EDIT: CloneZilla is a offline utility so you have to burn the ISO to a CD/DVD or create a bootable USB drive. Might be too much of a PITA for many. Has worked for me every time I've used it though.

Your last two partitions are in the wrong order and will not boot..

Your windows (disk1) knows to boot from Partition 5 where your OS is

Your clone has the OS on partition 6

You can either move the last two partitions in their proper place which will take time because it will be moving data....

or you can run a boot repair CD on the clone it will correct the bootmanager to the proper partition..

Disconnect your working drive before anything changes are made, unless you plan to run both OS on the system..

does anyone know of a free software that supports hybrid cloning? my best guess at this point is that macrium isn't gonna do it for me....

As I said before Clonezilla. However it is offline based, must boot from a CD or USB. The interface is more like DOS command structure but it has worked for me every time I've used it.
