Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade

How to Do a Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade

This tutorial will show you how to do a clean install with a Windows 8 upgrade copy on an empty drive (HDD/SSD).

Windows 8 System Requirements
Windows 8 works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 7.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: MicrosoftDirectX 9 graphics device or higher

Additional requirements to use certain features:

  • To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch.
  • To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.
  • To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.

Here's How:

1. If you haven't already, you will need to either purchase a Windows 8 Upgrade from a retailer, or use the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to purchase and download a Windows 8.1 ISO file online from Microsoft to create a bootable USB/DVD with.

2. Do a clean install or clean install with UEFI with your Windows 8 upgrade USB/DVD, and enter your Windows 8 product key number during installation.
NOTE: You can do the clean install using either a local account or Microsoft account. It doesn't matter.

warning   Warning
You will only be able to enter a Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro product key.

You will not be able to enter a Window Media Center Pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack product key. These are considered to be an upgrade key and can't be used to install Windows 8. These can only be added after Windows 8 is installed, then use Add Features to upgrade to the Window Media Center Pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack.

3. When the clean install is finished, if you check in System, you will see that your Windows 8 upgrade may not be activated yet.

not_activated.jpg

4. Do step 5 or 6 below for how you would like to activate the Windows 8 upgrade.

5. Activate by Refreshing the Windows 8 Upgrade

A) Refresh Windows 8, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You would use OPTION TWO at this link. Be sure to keep your Windows 8 installation DVD in the drive or Windows 8 installation USB connected.

6. Activate Windows 8 Upgrade using a BAT File Download

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below, and save it to your desktop.

download

B) Right click or press and hold on the downloaded .bat file, and click/tap on Run as administrator.

C) If prompted, click/tap on Run and Yes (UAC).
NOTE: If you like, you can stop getting the Run prompt by unblocking the downloaded .bat file.

D) You will now notice a command prompt quickly open and close while applying the changes to your registry.

E) Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Hello Bob,

You would just need to select to boot from your 64-bit DVD at boot instead of your 32-bit Windows 8. Afterwards, you should be able to do the rest of the tutorial on the first page to delete the 32-bit Windows 8 and installed the 64-bit. :)

You're welcome. I'm happy to hear that you are back to 64-bit now. :)

If you selected your old 32-bit Windows partition to install to, then it would have formatted it for you during installation. You might also check to see if you may have a Windows.old folder that you could delete to gain back more HDD space since you didn't start the installation with a deleted partition.

When I bought my Windows 8 Pro Upgrade from a store I was not asked for my qualifying OS key so I suspect this is a flaw in the system which someone clever just found out because there is no instructions from MS of this nature.
THe very nature of the way this is done is the give away. else it would itself go do a refresh...or is this just MS wanting you to install your 'old' OS each time?
I also did a clean install to start with and had to install Win 7 again because I did not know this method.
Anyway thanks Shawn for your very informed and talented mind...I wont tell a soul :)

Hey Ray,

It's mostly on the honor system to abide by the EULA to have a qualify OS when you buy a packaged Windows 8 upgrade in a box from a retail store.

Normally an upgrade is for upgrading from within the old Windows to the new Windows 8. However, Microsoft just allows it's customers to be able to do a clean install with an upgrade copy so as not to have to reinstall the old OS first and upgrade each time you need to reinstall Windows 8.

@Brink Refreshing the PC has obvious disadvantages (like removing many of your apps). It really doesnt seem like a Refresh would be necessary to do on an 8 install that's completely fresh and umodified and simply needs to be activated. That is my situation, and I have 2 Win8 Upgrade keys, one that i bought from Microsoft online, and another that i bought at Wal-Mart. Of course, when i attempt to use either of the keys, i get an error code, which i fully expected. However, it just seems like a Refresh isnt the best way to accomplish this, there's got to be a better way. I do also have a 7 Upgrade key that i bought on a student discount a few yrs ago (but lost the piece of paper the key was printed on, as well as the install disc). I found the following method on the Microsoft forums as well:

windows 8 activation after clean install does not accept product key - Microsoft Community

1. Run the registry editor (regedit)
2. Find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE
3. Change the value for 'MediaBootInstall' from 1 to 0
4. Open an elevated command prompt (run as admin)
5. Run the following command: slmgr -rearm
6. Reboot

Now you can activate.

Besides those 2 methods, is there any other way to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Hello Stephen,

There's not any other legal means than these that I know of.

If doing this from a clean install, then a refresh is the easiest and quickest method to activate.

Other than that, using OPTION THREE in the tutorial below for the same as what you posted above will work in Windows 8 as well without losing anything.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version - Windows 7 Forums

...then use this tutorial below to change/enter your legal product key number to activate.

Hi,
I have a system with 32bit version of XP and purchased a Windows 8 Pro upgrade license.
After realizing that I could not download the 64 bit version of the upgrade I contacted Microsoft that recommended to run the Upgrade Assistant from a 64 bit system, create an ISO image and use it for a FRESH install.
I did that all and realized, only after reinstalling the full system (including several apps) that my serial code was not set.

Then i found your tutorial and tried to run it from point 6 (activate windows 8 upgrade using a BAT File).

After running the BAT file, I tried to reboot the system (actually the action proposed by my system is "upgrade and reboot").
The system restarts and tries to upgrade but the process fails and rolls back.

So in the end I've not been able to get the system activated.

My question is: is there a way to activate the system without having to re-install all the third party applications?

Thanks,
Attilio

Hello Attilio, and welcome to Eight Forums.

"Upgrade and Reboot" indicates that Windows was going to install Windows Updates first, then reboot.

You might try the BAT again since an update may have interfered with it.

If that doesn't help, then try changing the product key number to your number again to see if it may toggle it activated.

However, most likely you may need to refresh. :(

I have a question, I'm planning to upgrade to an SSD sometime next year. If I do the clean install with the Windows 8 Pro upgrade now on my current boot drive (a 320gb wd drive.), will I be able to repeat the install on the new drive or do I need to get a new copy of Windows 8?

Yes, as long as you format the current 320 GB drive right before or after installing to the new drive. :)

Yes, as long as you format the current 320 GB drive right before or after installing to the new drive. :)

Just to be clear, you're saying I can do this more then once as long as I reformat the drive with the installed Windows 8 first?

Yes, the product key for the upgrade is a retail key, so you can install and activate as many times as you like so long as it's only activated on one PC at the same time.

Having been pointed to this thread by znod (thanks) I have done a fresh install of Win 8 via usb stick and on reboot I looked in the SYSTEM page to find that the system was shown as activated. The system page still shows this now after applying Windows updates. So far I have not needed to refresh the system or use the downloaded .bat file.

Hello Duckface,

Great news. :)

Did you have an OEM computer that came with Windows 8 preinstalled?

I am building a new system and am wondering if this will work for it, and also if I do this will I still be genuine as well as able to apply updates? Which is recommended step 5 or 6.
