How to Do a Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade

This tutorial will show you how to do a clean install with a Windows 8 upgrade copy on an empty drive (HDD/SSD).

Windows 8 System Requirements
Windows 8 works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 7.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: MicrosoftDirectX 9 graphics device or higher

Additional requirements to use certain features:

  • To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch.
  • To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.
  • To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.

Here's How:

1. If you haven't already, you will need to either purchase a Windows 8 Upgrade from a retailer, or use the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to purchase and download a Windows 8.1 ISO file online from Microsoft to create a bootable USB/DVD with.


2. Do a clean install or clean install with UEFI with your Windows 8 upgrade USB/DVD, and enter your Windows 8 product key number during installation.
NOTE: You can do the clean install using either a local account or Microsoft account. It doesn't matter.

warning   Warning
You will only be able to enter a Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro product key.

You will not be able to enter a Window Media Center Pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack product key. These are considered to be an upgrade key and can't be used to install Windows 8. These can only be added after Windows 8 is installed, then use Add Features to upgrade to the Window Media Center Pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack.

3. When the clean install is finished, if you check in System, you will see that your Windows 8 upgrade may not be activated yet.

4. Do step 5 or 6 below for how you would like to activate the Windows 8 upgrade.


5. Activate by Refreshing the Windows 8 Upgrade

A) Refresh Windows 8, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You would use OPTION TWO at this link. Be sure to keep your Windows 8 installation DVD in the drive or Windows 8 installation USB connected.

6. Activate Windows 8 Upgrade using a BAT File Download

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below, and save it to your desktop.

B) Right click or press and hold on the downloaded .bat file, and click/tap on Run as administrator.

C) If prompted, click/tap on Run and Yes (UAC).
NOTE: If you like, you can stop getting the Run prompt by unblocking the downloaded .bat file.

D) You will now notice a command prompt quickly open and close while applying the changes to your registry.

E) Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

E) Restart the computer to apply, and go to step 7 below.


7. When finshed, if you check in System, you will see that your Windows 8 upgrade is now activated with the product key you entered in step 2 above.

8. You have just finished doing a clean install with an upgrade copy of Windows 8.

I would like to know if I can purchase the $39.99 upgrade version of Windows 8 Pro by running the Upgrade Assistant on my 32 bit Windows 7 PC and then later install the resulting DVD to a 64 bit PC? I have read that the resulting ISO file and resulting DVD is bit-specific, but I would like to confirm that. The reason for asking is that I don't have ready access to a 64 bit PC running a qualifying OS from which to run the Upgrade Assistant and I may want to upgrade my just purchased 64 bit Windows 8 PC.

Order the Dell Reinstall DVD, you them have no need for a ISO.

You can use the Upgrade Product Key in ADD Features to upgrade.

Thanks. I'm a bit confused. I do intend to order the Dell CDs which includes a copy of Windows 8, but my question has to do with upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. With that in mind, it seems the most economical way is to purchase the $39.99 upgrade using Upgrade Assistant. I have read that the Upgrade Assistant generates an error if you run it on a Windows 8 PC. The question was whether I can use my current 32 bit Windows 7 PC to do that and then use the resulting DVD to clean install to my newly purchased 64 bit PC.

That is because you need to use ADD FEATURE, using the Upgrade Product Key to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.


With the dell DVD Windows 8 HP, you only need the Upgrade Product Key to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.


You can use the Upgrade Product Key in ADD Features to upgrade.

Thanks. We're obviously not communicating. I've read countless threads that explain how to use the $39.99 Windows 8 Pro promotion to do a clean install to a blank drive. My only question relates to whether the ISO file created by the Upgrade Assistant is bit-wise meaning that the DVD created can only be used on the bit type of the computer that the ISO file was downloaded to. I have read that it is bit-wise, but I would like to confirm that (preferably from MS).

For those interested here is one of many threads showing how to do a clean install using the $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade promotion:
A clean install, as discussed in the above thread, is an install to a blank disk. There are other threads as well using somewhat different methods. Basically, the methods are very similar to what was done for Windows 7.

With respect to my question above concerning the bit-wise nature of the ISO file, this link: contains this quote:

That would be correct. If you want a 64-bit Windows 8 Pro ISO, it will have to be downloaded from within a 64-bit Windows.

The 32-bit ISO will install on a 64-bit computer, but it will only install 32-bit Windows 8 Pro.

The 64-bit ISO will not install on a 32-bit computer.

The 32-bit ISO will install on a 64-bit computer, but it will only install 32-bit Windows 8 Pro.

The 64-bit ISO will not install on a 32-bit computer.

OP has a New Dell with Windows 8 HP, uEFI BIOS, Secure Boot, & a BIOS Product Key.

The download ISO has no support for uEFI.

OP Needs to order the Dell DVD which has uEFI support.

than use Add Feature to upgrade to Pro.

I was a little bit worried when it said that my product ID was not available when I upgraded but when I followed this it are up as windows activated. Thank you Brink!

I have another question about this, I got my backup discs in the mail and it included a 32 and 64 version, so I would like to install the 64 version, seeing as I have 4GB of memory.

However I naturally can't run the 64bit setup.exe file from the dvd.

So how would I go about installing a clean 64 bit install starting from a 32 bit os.
Do I just make a bootable usb with the 32 setup.exe and swap the dvd's or how ?
