I am wondering if there is a way to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on a Windows 8 tablet.

Tablet Model is ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C2.

It came originally with Windows 8 32bit. I was wanting to know if there is a possibility of doing this with a Windows 8.1 Disc.

Now i know there is a way to hook up a portable optical drive with a cable called a USB OTG.
I was told by ASUS though i would not be able to boot from the optical drive like a PC or Laptop could and to be able to boot from this OS disc so i can do the install this way.

So is there is a way maybe by making a disc. image and putting it on it's MicroSD or running it directly from the disc, i am not sure how this would work wanting to do a custom install.

Question is there any differences with the Windows 8 OS on the tablet now, compared to the OS on the disc usually used for a PC or Laptop ?

Well when i first received this tablet i tried to update it through Windows update, which i had 115 updates to do. It took hours, then while configuring the updates were it says " Windows is configuring updates do not turn off your PC ".

After awhile i get it saying " Failure to configure updates, Windows is rolling back changes" this went on all night till next day and i had to force restart it through the hole which you put a paper clip in. Then i had to do a reset.

Still it is taking forever to download Windows update, i am trying a few at a time. Since i figured out i had a Windows update problem i did some researching on it and i used Microsoft Fix it, so far now it is downloading updates, let's see how it goes. Will do a few at a time for now.

I do like a clean install ,just wanted to know if it is possible or not on a tablet. I didn't get a chance to use system restore yet till now, guess was because i was just getting things going with tablet, i first came across this issue with updates. I usually use sytem restore on my Desktop a lot.

Just a thought, not something i would do, but skips all these updates since tablets much slower then a PC or Laptop.

Do the updates a bunch at a time, if you try to do them all at once you will wind up in a bad situation, it might take longer but then you will not crash the tablet

Yes this is what i am doing, few updates at a time. So far the ones i did already went in fine, even after a restart.

As said reason it wasn't working is that there was a problem found with Windows update when i used the Fix-It Troubleshoot tool from Microsoft and it made the repairs, then it seems to be working so far i was able to download and install 60 updates.

Let see how the rest goes. True it seems easier to crash this Tablet unlike a Desktop PC.

I just wanted to know if it was possible to do a clean install, this was not just for a way out of this issue with Windows update that i posted this for.

No big deal if there is not, i will eventually upgrade to Windows 8.1 when i get in all these updates for Win8 first.
Think i have about 55 more left, Thanks for responding.

Update:

All my Windows 8 updates went in fine now, i am now installing the update to Windows 8.1, so far it's almost done.

Updates i did for Windows 8 went in much faster after correcting the issues with Windows update it had with Microsoft's Tool,Fix-It.

All Windows 8 updates went in successfully and i upgraded to Windows 8.1 and that went in fine too.

Actually gained more disk space and then even more after running
Disk cleanup.

I assume there is not a way to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 from a disk or making a ISO image, that anyone knows.
Thing that would get me is if i have to ever do a system recovery i will have to download all those Windows 8 updates again and then Update to Windows 8.1 again.

One reason i asked about this option. I have the disc's.

If you mean by hooking up a portable DVD through a USB OTG cable, but would be unable to boot from disc.

Another option making a ISO image, then copy it to the MicroSD card and mounting the image.
Did this with Microsoft Office.

These i feel are only option, but limit to booting from an OS disc if needed to.

First, some tablets have a locked partition and you cannot install any other OS onto it. Not sure if this is the way your tablet is or not. My experience is if the tablet came pre-installed with Windows 8 then it has a good chance of having a locked partition.

I have an Asus B121 tablet. It originally came with Windows 7 and it does not have a locked partition.

I have a Windows 8.0 Pro upgrade key but I just finished doing a clean install of Windows 8.1 on it so it can be done.

Guess i would only know if i did ever try a clean install of Windows 8.1 on it, if it is locked or not.

As far as even using the recovery to restore to factory settings if i ever had to, ASUS said i need to hook up a Keyboard to the Tablet to be able to do it, by pressing F9 at boot. Where USB OTG Cable comes in for that option.

Question is how did you do the clean install in case i find out my recovery partition is not locked out ? Any of my options from post #9.
Thanks for reply!!

Glad I found this thread. I just return my ME400C as it was stuck in the revoery mode after I tried to do the updates. I guess maybe there wasn't anything wrong with it but after 2 days of " Failure to configure updates, Windows is rolling back changes" I could only assume it was defective so I sent it back. Have a replacment coming but this time I will do the updates a few at a time.

I'm looking forward to using it but man ...what a pain to get it up to date.

Hi Sundance,

Glad this thread could have helped you, it might when you get it back. Yes it was a pain to update but i was persistent to fix it myself.
No, as you see not defective, i am not sure how this happened but after using Microsoft Fix it for Windows update, everything went in fine, even Windows 8.1 update.

Never tried a recovery, i was told by ASUS i needed a keyboard hooked to Tablet to be able to get into the recovery. Press F9 on boot.

How would you suggest I proceed? Do the Asus upgrades first and then the Windows upgrades? If so how many of the windows items should I upgrade at a time?

If ASUS has any Live Updates do them first, then Windows 8 updates before you can do Windows 8.1 update, of course.
ASUS ones i recall was maybe one or two,can do them all at once, but the Windows 8 updates for me was like 117.

Now as it was for me, i did not do them all at once, maybe 10 or more at a time,OP said i may crash the Tablet then.
Also matters to on speed of your WiFi connection.

As you first saw in this post my issue was with a problem with Windows update i fixed.
Funny i was looking for an answer if possible for doing a clean install, meanwhile i am helping solve an issue with another, well hope i helped you from my thread.

Happy to say just finished doing the updates and update to win 8.1 and all went well. Took 5 hours but hopfuly I'll never have to do that again.

Thanks for your help.

Do you happen to know how to turn off NFC? I have no use for it and no need for it to consume batt. if I will never use it.

On the asus tablet before doing any windows updates you must do their live updates first. Their updates include driver and bios updates. I urge you to do these first. On the asus forum for this tablet, i read if you did not do their updates first windows updates would fail or worse

I followed their advice and my updates went smooth and when it was time to do 8.1 i checked asus live updates first to make sure there was no updates or updates to the tablet. I waited a few weeks before i did the update to 8.1 which i am glad i did because sure enough there was an update from asus. Once i did the update, windows 8.1 went very smoothly

Hi sundance,

Your Welcome, you mean Bluetooth ?

If so if it is in the notification area, right click or with touch hold finger then select settings.
Remove the icon in tray by unchecking it and turn of Discovery option, should also be in the control panel.
