Classic Shell Start Menu not coming up

I have win8.1& have installed the Classic Shell Start Menu for XP, it comes up when I boot up or
restart
, but when I click on the Start button a second time, it's not coming up and it might be in my settings,
but I'm not real sure.
Is there a default setting?
Are there "typical" settings?
I can't seem to find the right combination for proper operation and it's probably something dumb I've done or
haven't done....any help would be appreciated

From my practice:
I use Classic Start Menu in Windows 8.1 all the time since installation, currently 4.3.1 (it may be slightly outdated, but works well anyway). The most important settings are:
1) Start button -> Replace Start button
2) Start Menu style -> Custom Start button (I use Windows 7 - like button, it's a matter of personal preference)
3) Windows 8.1 settings -> Skip Metro screen
4) General Behavior -> Start automatically for this user
Most of these settings are default, you can check and set like you wish.
To be run with OS, Start Menu is included to the HKLM:Run branch of the Registry. Again, it was added by settings and not manually. You can check this using Regedit or CCleaner (Tools -> Startup). Executable file should have a parameter -autorun

Slavic,
thanks for the response...I finally got myself setup and running, but I had to uninstall the newest classic shell and reinstall 4.2 version and it works....EXCEPT....I'm setup with the two column like I had but when I click on THIS PC or CONTROL PANEL, etc. I am presented with a column of info instead of a page with the hard drives being shown or a proper control panel...I was able to 'see' what drives I had and was able to go to Device Manager and re-label drives that were connected but not showing up, but I can't get to that either unless there's another way of doing that...just thought I'd let you know and thanks again.

Look at the Special Items tab, then choose either Display as menu or Display as link. For example, Control Panel is traditionally shown as link, while Recent documents as menu. You can change some other options here too.

Slavic,
thanks man, awesome, that fixed it up...I was under the impression because I had set the display up as two columns that the extensions would also be shown as a column....thanks again that really helped!
