Some of these sites package PUPs and toolbars with the product. If you go to the author's site you should be OK.

I'm still finding odd bugs with Classic Shell on windowsn 8.1 home prem x64.
One that is consistent is, in its default settings, accesses to folders in Windows Explorer have an unusual delay before the contents of the folder are apparent. I notice this particularly accessing the Downloads Folder when Windows Explorer is not already up/running.
Perhaps I should just turn off all features related to Windows Explorer? [I know of nothing I need CS to do there...]
I also have noticed some random event/s will defeat Classic Shell and I cannot track/correlate this with anything in the Windows Event log. Few times I've had it just "not be there" - not alive, and instead I will be looking at the default 8.1 desktop settings. After a reboot, CS will be coherent again.

Have you changed your default power settings? Sounds like the default setting of putting your hard drive to sleep is causing the delay until it spins up again when you access it.

Control Panel > Power Options > Change Settings.
Inputting a zero value is equivalent to "Never".

I also have noticed some random event/s will defeat Classic Shell and I cannot track/correlate this with anything in the Windows Event log. While setting up a friend's new Dell PC running Win 8.1, I installed the Classic Shell as the first step. Second step was to disable all sleep options for everything including the monitor. During the week I had the PC I did not experience any problems. He has been using the PC for about 7 months without any problems.

From what I've seen it is perfectly safe and you will still be able to use the Start Screen.

I have been using Classic Shell on Windows 8 and 8.1 for a long time without any problems.

I only use the Classic Start Menu module and untick Classic Explorer module in the installer.

The File Explorer ribbon provides copy & paste buttons etc so I don't feel the need to use the Classic Explorer module on Windows 8.
However, I do use the Classic Explorer module on Windows 7.

If I use Start Menu 8 from IOBit, does anyone see much of a reason to switch to Classic Shell? (ie. stability, metro looks, etc)
:)

(I might try it, only because so many folks here praise it's claims)

At How to Disable Aero Glass Transparency in Windows 8 Taskbar? - AskVG it is clained that the latest edition of Classic Shell has an option to make the Taskbar opaque in Windows 8.1.

I use Classic Shell and always keep it updated. However the option checked in the image above is missing from my Classic Menu application. Just to make sure that I had the latest version, I re-downloaded the latest version (4.0.6) and reinstalled but no dice.

Can anyone please help?

Not to bother because I have solved the problem. The option is on the "Windows 8.1 Settings" Tab.
