Classic Shell for Windows 8

I just changed from StartMenu 7 to Classic Shell.

Once I'd played around with the options, I'm very happy with it.

And it looks much neater and more professional.

win8cp, classic start menu.
popup settings for classic start menu 3.5.0.
startup pc, we want to ensure that pop-up screen does not come out.

Can you please elaborate? Bonus points for using a specific example or complete sentences.

I put the start menu setting to win8 startup.
Actually, when I start PC, I want to only start button.
I do not understand this setting.

If you are talking about the setting "Disable the Start screen popup", it is to prevent the tiny start menu thumbnail from popping up when you move the mouse to the bottom-left corner. It does not disable the Metro start screen.

Hover the mouse over the setting to see a tooltip that describes it in more detail.

Hm, that's quite hard to see. The MenuItems value was saved as hex numbers. Can you post it as text?
Anyway, my guess would be that your Computer has some shell extension that is incompatible with Classic Shell - maybe an icon handler, or namespace extension?
You can narrow down the problem by including the sub-items of Computer as separate menu items. Then open them one by one to see which one freezes Explorer.

@esd827

Do you mean you want the start button to appear automatically?

It does for me.

See if the ClassicShellService is installed correctly. Start type 2.

@esd827 - looks like the service doesn't work for some people. I am researching solutions, but I need more info. Please answer these two questions:
1) Do you automatically log in, or do you have to enter a password every time?
2) If you log out, and then log in, does the start button appear?

@SIW2 - that's weird. Can you find some crash information? Like callstack, or a crash dump?
Does Paragon have any shell integration? If so, maybe it tries to affect the HDD icons or behavior. That would explain why opening Computer fails, because the HDDs are immediately inside. Try disabling it and let me know if it helps.

Pargon doesn't have any shell integration at all.

7-zip does of course.

Don't think that is the problem.

I have Classic shell in my win8 pe build - I used exactly the same reg entries, and it works fine. ( I have 7-zip in there as well )

I left a lot of metro out of the pe build.

Maybe that has something to do with it.

Correct the request.
My request is very simple.
When I start PC, I would like to be the picture below the desktop screen.

Automatically log in. Login password is not set in my PC.
2) If you log out, and then log in, does the start button appear?
PC restart, the start button appear.

Fresh install win8 RP x86. Set up classic shell from scratch.

Only added 1 item - computer as a menu.

Explorer crashes and restarts when selecting a drive from the computer menu.

Dble clicking on any drive like in the screenie causes the problem

If shell extensions are a suspect in the crash, you can use NirSoft's ShellExView to see which are installed by any programs. I added (My) Computer as an expandable menu but clicking any of the drives isn't crashing Explorer for me.

I have tested it on three different machines (Tablet, Netbook, Notebook):
1) Do you automatically log in, or do you have to enter a password every time?
Automatically log in.

2) If you log out, and then log in, does the start button appear?
Yes, then the start button appears.

If I use a password and have to enter the password at login, then the start button appears right away.

My workaround:
  • Disabled the service "Classic Shell" via "msconfig"
  • Start "Classic Shell" via shortcut in startup folder
Works on all three machines.
